pruning palm tree

Hello, I was wondering about pruning the dead or half dead fronds that were damaged over winter on my palm tree. Is it a good idea or will it hurt the tree. new growth in center looks nice and green. Have attached a couple of pics. thanks. Keith

It would be k to cut off all the dead stuff, I cut the dead leaves off mine every year and its going on its third year. I haven't ever had any trouble with it.

It's alright to prune off the dead parts of the fronds but I would leave the green part in tact. I know it's ugly looking but the more green a young palm has the more energy it can make from the sun. If you trim off too much viable foliage it will stunt the growth of the tree. I wouldn't cut off the entire frond until the stem itself turns brown.

I always trim dead or dying parts, and I also trim the edges of any fronds of "inddoor" palms that get burnt from the bright march sun when I bring them outside . That is just a matter of taste I guess.

All that green growth is a very good sign.

Hey Barb , I went ahead and pruned most of the dead branches off. I will take a picture in morning and post it. It looks good but I am still unsure what type of palm it is. It has pups coming up on the sides, the fronds are straight not curled. I know windmill does not have pups. Maybe mediterrean fan palm. Any help would be appreciated. Nice to see it survive zone 5b.

Good morning. Barb I told you I would post pictures. the first 2 are the palm I pruned. As you can see there is pups coming up from the side. If anyone can help Id this palm would be great. The next picture is my musa basjoo coming back strong. The fourth picture is my new windmill palm I picked up on the coast for $30, with white bird of paradise in the fore ground. I also bought a giant chinese silver grass which is to the right of the windmill.

Hi Keith,

I think posters`earlier ID still stands...european fan palm, Chamaerops humilis.

Nice Trachy purchase for $30...that's sure a good price for Canada.
It`s a little stretched looking from having been grown in shade (probably).
Its leaves will be more compact as it settles in this year.

Your Basjoo`s doing well.
Obviously a lot warmer at your place than mine.
I`m starting to wish for `heat island` effect from being in the city

I can believe a european fan palm. on the other post they thought it was a Livistona chinensis or chinese fan palm but it does not have droopy fronds.thanks barb.

While a sick-ish palm can sometimes resemble something else, a L.chinensis has more leaf surface (the only way I can describe it

), whereas Chamaerops humilis has more "divisions" in the leaf. But hey, time will be the proof.
