The temp ups and downs can be a little tough to take this time of year!

Oh, its only.... 3 degrees C below normal for the low. Not bad at all, but since its been so mild, and/or right on average, things are a bit ahead of schedual. My russian olive bud burst yesterday, and my apple is not far behind (the native/naturalized stuff is fine).

That's crappy Jesse, after a warm late winter.
You can hope that it's a wonky forecast.

Like your highs, Igor, but the lows BRRRRRRR
Fortunately lows are mostly many years apart.

Glad the mess is missing you Aaron.
But I've not seen it "sweep" so low in a long time.
Even N.CA had cold winds and rain last week from this thing hanging around.

IM EVER SO PISSED!

Post by canadianplant » Mon Apr 16, 2012 6:36 am

The weather man LIED. IT was supposed to snow last night, turns out we had 5 HOURS OF FREEZING RAIN/ICE PELLETS! Things that bust buds, 4 clematis, raspberry, black berry, russian olive are frozen. The apple is covered, the bamboos were covered, ALL of my seedlings outside were iced over.........

On top of that.... -12 C tonight............................

What are the odds things made it?

Oh no, Jesse!
ALL of my seedlings outside were iced over
Can you put them in an unheated garage at least?
Or a cool basement?

Its cold, but not 22F. We got almost 30mm of rain, it changed to freezing rain, then to ice pelets, then to mix, then to snow, then it stopped... There are non frozen puddles everywhere, and stuff is slowly melting. Its around 0C (yeah cold)...

Nothing was covered... and its gonna be -12C tonight....

Heres the good thing Jim. I have NOTHING major planted, as my season was just getting going. The lilacs havnt even opened buds yet. I forgot about my Rhodo "hellikki", but im sure its fine, aw crap and my azalea (just reembered). The apple is uncovered (buds werent open), my russian olive (just opened buds), veggie seedlings, crape vines (again, not bud burst). Pretty much anything that had closed, yet swolen buds I left alone. Same with spring bulbs. THe only things that sprouted were chives, bee balm and a few other random ground covers

I covered my rose, bamboos, and clematis (the buds JUST opened the day before the freezing rain  )

In retrospect, the ice might have protected some things from the cold. IT also showed the moderatign effect of the lake. You went near the airport, they got 2 inches of snow. Any further away then that, they got a foot. The closer to the lake you got, the more freezing rain.mix there was. It was actually cool to see it in pictures from the different areas here!

Naw, nothing like that. lowest forcasted is -6C (yeah cold, but only 3C below average lows, concidering the long term above average temps weve had, this is nothing). Everything is fine. I may have lost a random bud here or there but everything is ok. Just over paranoid :D

With climate change comes more unpredictability weather wise. Weve been getting less and less snow here over the last 10 15 years.

I hope that Noreaster gives you a good few inches of rain (without flooding of course :D )

It should give us at least a 1.5 inch total at the least...We're pretty lucky here in NJ, sandy soil absorbs pretty well. Thanks
