Frost Last night
So we had a frost last night here and it damaged quite a few things. Luckily my elephant ears and my Red Abyssinian Banana were not damaged they are in pots under a tree. I just got Mojito, Black Beuty, Borneo giant, and China pink elephant ears. My basjoos Bananas and my cannas and my petunias I just planted were frosted on, hopefully things will recover
I should have covered stuff up. So frustrating. grrr maybe I jumped the gun this year on planting.

I did the same thing...I mean I actually waited but as soon as I planted them
(the forecast like it always does)changed and they were saying a hard frost was possible.....
Never fails, you leave them in pots as long as you want but as soon as you plant them it will get cold.
I did cover/heat my EE's and Bananas and they are fine-except the Lasiocarpa.....
I did not heat but did cover the Castor bean plants...it stayed about 40F in there and they made it.
Maybe another quick brush with frost next week and then in the clear???? Hope so.
Funny thing is,the next frost could be worse(since it never actually forsted here)as we
may get some rain in here finally and this could cause some actual frost to form.....
It was to dry here to frost even though we hit 28F!

Well a few hrs later the frost damage is more apparent and my impatients, and coleus are damaged down to there roots, but some growth towards the bottom is alive so hopefully they will grow back. Petunias and sweet potato vine have some minor damage. My basjoos have some leaf burn as do some of the cannas it was kinda hit and miss. Luckily the elephant ears and the Red Abyssinian banana have no damage, the impatients and coleus in the shade garden were untouched thanks to the hostas, ferns and the oak tree. I think here we are in the clear no for frost. The forecast says its going to be in the 70s again soon and the low for tonight is only 47. Hopefully no more frosts and things damaged will recover. I haven't planted my castor beans yet, ill prob do that next week. I am glad your plants were no too badly damaged Jim, the weather needs to make up its mind.

You'll do ok, and don't blame yourself. Three weeks ago, our temps dipped to 30 one night and I panicked and covered my musas....they got too hot and burnt the next afternoon...One never knows!!!!

Week end storms
By now I guess you guys have heard all about the tornadoes that have come thru the central and Midwestern states,I was a another lucky one again, tornado came with a mile or two of my house, only bad weather I had was the orange slice sized hail and the heavy rain and strong winds,I could hear the tornado just south and east of my house, and it does sound like a train coming right at you,the tornado took almost exact path of another tornado back in 91 and again in 1999,and living here at those times as well. I have had my plants outside now since last week of march, and they have already gone thru 3 hail storms with strong winds, and the temps have fallen as low as 41*,so far everything is looking good other than a few sun burnt leaves,it really takes more than a couple weeks to harden plants off ,but I have so many plants I rush them on out after 2 weeks of semi shade, irises and peonies are already blooming here, month or more early!
