Although temps are returning to normal I have a bad feeling

Post by hardyjim » Tue Apr 03, 2012 7:00 am

about what happens after.....................

We have been really blessed this spring with the warmest
March in history-at least 42 years of it.

This week the temps will return to normal but I
have a bad feeling it will just be the begining
of a colder trend-I hope I am wrong!

The good news(for some)could be that places that
have not had much spring weather may shift-

Not worried about April. Maybe cooler than March, but still above average:

Summer?
I'm scared:

Going to be gone to cooler places as much as possible of June and July.

I am a little worried,to many tender plants in and to many nights near and possibly below freezing.

Yes, I see. We are now at about our usual last freeze and nothing close to that in the forecast so I think we are good to go down here (36oN). Are you likely to get close to freezing?

I just checked the 30-day forecast by Accuweather and they show our highest temp at 70F and lowest at 36F. So we seem to be OK here.

That looks about like our forcast, except we might see some lows in the low 20's :)

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

NOAA and Weatherbug have us pegged at 32F tonight and tomorrow night. No big deal but I'll close up the greenhouse and drag the container plants into the garage.

As usual I planted my Bananas and Colocasia(etc) and heres the great part..............

Within a day of planting the new Ensete Glaucum and the others mentioned the forecast changed.

The problem is the forecasts are not trustworthy and one has us not going below about 36F
but WU mentioned in the forecasters discussion the temps for next week look to optimistic
and that lows in the mid 20s are likely and some areas may not get out of the 40s for highs....

They do cover a large area so,hopefully those temps are up north and we won't see anything much below 32F :x

The warm weather did almost have me fooled but it just never warms up this much/this early without paying the price!

I do have plenty of protection for all the stuff and I may have just established a new policy......

Don't plant more tender plants than palms and catcus and you may be able to cover everything! :D

I hear you with forecasts..........we have to check 2x per day or we'll get that freeze without knowing.

I just checked the forecast for TONIGHT and TOMORROW NIGHT.

NOAA has lows of 32F and 31F for us, WHILE

ACCUWEATHER has lows of 41F and 41F, WHILE

WEATHERBUG has lows of 32F and 32F, WHILE

WEATHERUNDERGROUND has lows of 34F and 34F

I only looked at Accuweather I'd be surprised!

Kind of you to ask :D

Yes

It was 28F at the airport(north of here)and 33F here/32F briefly.

I have covered the Bananas,EE's in an effort to keep their early growth and make good use of a record March.

Although they seem to be o.k. with our suddenly(in the last year)dry freezes and no frost!

Hope everyone is faring well with the cooler nights. It is still pretyt mild here BUT we are sooooooooo dry. Down about 5 inches for the past few months in precip. Wildifres too...UGH! Everything is so beautiful this time of year, hate to see it turn so dry and withered if we don;t soon get reain! Is anyone else having the same problem?? :(

Yea Mike

I think we would qualify as a desert the last 10 months or so.....

I know I mentioned this but about 5" of rain June-Oct 2011 and only a couple rainfalls over an in since then!

This will illustrate this better-look at the numbers from yesterday-the dry air caused temps to
drop like I have never seen after a sunny day and no cold frontal passage.

High temp 57F/ lowest dewpoint -13F!.....that is insane here in Iowa in April or ANY non winter month!

at one point the humidity dropped to 5%

BTW

23F at the airport north of here-we hit 28F

Could have been worse-like if I didn't cover the Nanars last night!

Yeah, usually warmer than what airports report, fortunately.
But 28 is brutal after the warm weather you guys have had.

We're back in yet another Omega block or whatever the #$*&^%@ they call it.
Warm, then cold, then who knows?

A lot of my tropicals are still in the cold building, can't go outside with cold overnight winds.
Too many to move in and out daily.
They look like hell.

Looks like I'll have a lot of spare plant pots this spring
