Is it May?

Post by Paul Ont » Wed Mar 14, 2012 11:22 am

Just wondering if I, perhaps, missed 2 months in there somewhere... The lowest temp in the forecast is 8c (~46f). This would be normal weather for May around here: http://www.theweathernetwork.com/statis ... 0/caon0696

Local TV meterologists here say we are already in May.
This morning, low of 63 F broke the old highest low record (58 F) by 5 F

Dr. Jeff Masters asks instead if it is JUNE on his blog today:

which also mentions the heavy snows at my parent's Oregon coast house.

That is a lot of record highs! Wow. We've broken only one all-time record high so far (but we've been close each day this week)...

And here I am still waiting for winter...

So you're telling me that our top 5 January was followed by a Feb that equaled the alltime? Man, this must have been the all-time mildest winter for Toronto!

Well, Enviro canada is telling you :P But that is what it seems, and across the country for the most part (Cept BC and parts of the maritimes IIR). Its also following some of the warmest nov and dec Ive had here. Followed by one of the warmest summers and falls.... well, you get the picture.....

I find a few things odd:

THe previous winters have been similar as this one, but maybe not as extreme. The USDA map has changed, from 30 year averages, on average one zone. Then we get this year, when the winter is extremely mild, longer then I can remember, then get suddenly slammed into spring temps. Im wondering if this is possibly permanent.....

I am blown away how fast people forget about the last 3-4 years-winters.

I have thought the same thing though, like maybe that was winters last
fight and now we will see milder winters......but I doubt it.

I have never seen a warm winter, then spring not get cold but this year is strangly different!

Even after we cool from upper 70s and 80s it looks like temps will settle back
to the upper 60s and 70s.....still well above normal just not 30(f)+.

BTW

Jim- Have your winters been bad recently? We've had most (8?) of our top 10 mildest winters of all-time since 1998.

I think it is premature to say that this winter is a new norm. This winter will still be an outlier and I am confident that we will return to our 'normal', but definitely warming, winters by next year!

SAme here paul. spring is on average 2 weeks earlier and fall is on average 2 weeks later then 100 years ago, and most of that occured recently within the last 30 years.

Im not saying THIS winter will be the norm, but Im pretty sure its a sign of things to come. I also cant ignore, that I had a winter and summer (09/10) that was very, very similar to this one. Having 2 winters liek this, so close together is interesting IMO.

Yet in BC (or BS as Jesse calls it  ), we've hoped that any "benefits" would be warmer winters for us as palm-growers.
This certainly was that kind of winter for folks in the eastern half of North America.

Mostly we've seen hotter summers, which the Okanagan valley doesn't need.

Most noticeable to me over the last 4 or 5 years is that we seem to have 3 SEASONS now.
Spring got dropped.

I think last year they said we had the second coldest summer on record, for southern Idaho. Might of been the year before? :?

And seem like too me we have warmer falls, but colder springs. :?

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Yea Paul, the last three winters before this one were pretty brutal.

I have never seen it this warm in March after a mild winter, usually
you get the cold you didn't get in winter March/April or May.

This will be fun to observe and see what happens.............

I am leaning toward a very hot summer right in the middle of the country,
right where the warmth is now, either that or we don't have a summer....

notice normal is not an option
