here is a pic of palm in starokorsunskaya, russia. palm is brought from iran in 1980's. there are also 2 other palms from afghanistan planted in backyard. afghans are green in colour, while this one iranian is blue colour of the leaves. palms are from some mountain regions in iran and afghanistan. dont know where from exactly. the owner was in military missions there in iran and afghanistan, and brought the palms about 30 years ago. palms were protected just with cardboard when were smaller, and now when are huge just trunk is protected. leaves die,but it recovers every year. even it has fruits with seeds that germinates. and we are takling about russia. not sochi. lowest temps this year was lower than -20 C,for many days, when i watched in internet weather on line. this is the cold hardest feather palm (phoenix) i ever seen. one friend from serbia has 2 palms from seeds of those from starokorsunskaya.also he got some seeds, and i got 3 seeds from him, that germinated. the seeds i got then are the hybride between this 2 cold hardy palms from iran - afghanistan. it would be great to grow this 3 and have it outdoor all year round.

the huge palm in starokorsunskaya

small palm in serbia from this friend, pic taken this year under snow. palm had just passive protection, not heated, and survived -25 C in serbia, zone 6 to 7

also one pic inside the cage of protection, palm was wrapped with few lays of nylon, old carpet...

and here it is,small palm after the winter this year,NO DAMAGE AT ALL !!

leaves green as in middle of summer

small trunk
i posted the same topic at EPS,european palm society, but there was no positive opinion about it. some said that it could be planted year before and pictured.
pic was taken in december 2011. by this friends friend who works there in starokorsunskaya,by mobile phone, thats why pic quality is bad. he will go there again in spring now. he also said when he returned to serbia in december, temp was -20 C and there was about one meter of snow. it seems that it is date palm. it has offshoots at the trunk,as this man who saw it says. he will take new pics and send it to this friend. it will be great to see it now after this cold winter. and i doubt that it is not alive any more.
