Update on yesterdays(possible 5F event?)snow and cold.

Post by hardyjim »

Probably cloer to the 12F(Cactus bed) or 15F air temp on the north side of the house judging by the real lack of damage to leaves..

Already looking better than it did here!

<a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/albums/mm22 ... 2026-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm22 ... 2026-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/albums/mm22 ... ent018.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm22 ... ent018.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Princeps I planted about 2 weeks ago, this was covered and kept above 40F

<a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/albums/mm22 ... ent024.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm22 ... ent024.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/albums/mm22 ... ent050.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm22 ... ent050.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The other T.ferns are leafless but alive-not bad
considering last falls blown forecast of 25F
turned out to be 19F,this defoliated all but the
D.A.(unfazed btw),about 50% defo on the Squarossa.

C.Medularis was killed along with another potted one, thankfully the C.Brownii survived.....
this is one of the most fun T.ferns to watch grow.

Cooperi

<a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/albums/mm22 ... ent012.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm22 ... ent012.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Next year I will try and keep more of the fronds as they seem to overwinter well in the protction.

Little Takil...what snow??

<a href="http://s297.photobucket.com/albums/mm22 ... ent038.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm22 ... ent038.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Get out the lawnchair and enjoy it Jim.
Well deserved.

Today the Cerifera and small Waggie pulled,
Brutal.
After a whole winter of protection, that one event caused spearpull. :x
Sheesh.
At least that doesn't freak YOU, as it would me. :D

They are both still up and alert...looks like 2 spears out of each one.

If we get the 70s all next week and lows in the 40s & 50s as forecast,
they may begin to show signs of growth/recovery by the following week.....
which is forecast to be in the upper 60s!

May actually see some recovery right around the first day/days of spring.

Last years spring (March/April) was so cold it took until May!

Yeah, I remember your last winter/spring.
Thought you'd still be melting snow in June.

With warm temps next week, are you gonna start fertilizing?

I laid down a little salt and pepper coating of Milorganite,0-0-60 K and some Epsom salts.

I don't think the Milorganite is very high in N,maybe 5%,so it shouldn't make
everything go crazy right away but sometimes the K can!

Carl Pool palm food arrives tomorrow or Monday and if the forecast looks the same
I will use some of that too....also layed down some Milorganite and compost on the T.ferns.

They are also covered with mini-G-houses to break them loose :D

Looking like a warm spring this time....

Should? or shouldn't?

I thought you only used epsom salts and K in the Fall.

Well it was contagious Jim...hope you don't mind me hitch-hiking on your post.

Uncovered my stuff today (except the big Trachy in the hut...need extra hands for that).

Leaving the frames and Christmas lights in place, just in case I have to throw plastic over them.

Looks a heck of a lot nicer too without all those leaf garbage bags... :D

Yippppeeeeee...it's spring :blob6: :happy1: :hello2: :hello1: :headbang: :icescream:

Hey Barb,

your Washy looks great. Keep us updated on that one. I discovered my lights in my Washy hut were not working.......go figure.

Hi Jim,

what is the deal with 'Tesan'? I forget why this is different from other Trachy's.

Good stuff guys! Im right behind you finally, except I have to shovel some snow off of my beds. Last 2 days, lows in the - teens C, today 12C, and around that for the forseeable future!

Jim, if you get this blast of southern/western air like me, it wont take long to see some groth explosion on those plants. You should be seeing that P nigra shooting within the next few weeks if this holds for ya! Give it some compost, and some nitrogen fert!

Last year I didn't fertilize at all,as of Monday I will have fertilized as much as last year!

I have been bringing 70-80F water/fert down from my place for all the palms,T.ferns etc.

The color of the palms is so lush and green now, can't wait to see what they look like
this time next week after a week of(hopefully some T/storms tomorrow) highes in the 70-80F range!

Soil temp at 4" is already 51F, @ 50F, N and other nutrients are "unlocked" and you see the plants
color and growth really enhanced.....!....not to mention they really break loose and start growing!

T.Tesan is a more compact form of Fortunei with mountain origins,I believe bred for cold hardiness.

For some reason I don't think I posted a picture of the Princeps.....maybe I did?

Anyway,here it is.

The scorching on the leaves is from the heat last year.

It does have spear-pull........................
