Aloe Ecklonis....thanks Cameron!

a couple Aloe ecklonis seedlings sitting at my work's window sill........photo taken a few minutes ago. Thanks Cameron! The other seedling is a Yucca aloifolia. The larger pot just outside of the photo has a Trachycarpus 'Korea'. Anyone growing that?

Couldn't find any mature pics of A. ecklonis...fairly rare?

Oooh, never heard of a T.Korea...how about moving the camera over to the right?

Barb, A. ecklonis is a relatively uncommon Aloe from high altitudes in the Drakensberg mountains. It is supposed to be fairly hardy.

Tim, Cameron sent me some seeds as well, mine is almsot the exact same size, and also lost some of its leaves as well. IT looks almost identical to yours !

Hi Barb,

I wish. My 'grasshoppers' have long ears, like to eat carrots (at least on cartoons) and multiply by the 1,000's in my neighborhood. Some people claim they leave big footprints in snow like this:

Despicable that people have released pet rabbits.
You'd think that they would've learned something called cause/effect from feral cat issues.

I may have seen a rabbit one time in my yard in many years.......
maybe the squirrels eat them-there are a lot of those.

we also have a few chipmunks living in the stones around my koi pond. Do they eat plants too?

Rabbits dont come into the city here.... And no chipmunks dont eat plants, they like seeds and nuts .

The rabbits in calgary are huge. The size of beagles!

The Aloes in the first photo were germed last year...........this is their second season. They are located in a spot which gets full sun from 8am to 3:30pm. The more sun the better!

I had to ask, because I have horrible luck with aloe. Ive only managed to keep them alive with 2 hours of direct light (im pretty sure aloe need full sun, so this throws me for a loop).

As for the Ecklonis, mine does better with dappled light. Every time I move it into sun it bakes and dries up, even after weeks of it being climatized.

I recall my Aloe getting some sun burn in spring too.........not sure why. They seem fine now.

I think I just have weird luck with aloe. Ive killed more aloe vera then I will admit too, even when im able to keep orchids alive, and other tough houseplants.

Ill try moving it into a bit more light and see what happens now lol. Thanks

I had a few of the Korean Waggies a few years back that came with
my first T.Tesan order from Jeff Z in NJ.

They looked like they would be interesting looking palms when larger
but one I planted was not very hardy and core pulled the first year
not to be heard from again-not much info on them at the time.
They were said to be super hardy(like so many others)but I don't
think that was ever verified......

Update...........Aloe ecklonis's outer leaves were fried last week while other Aloes were not............not good for A. ecklonis. I may dig them up. A. ecklonis reminds me of A. striatula.........but striatula is one of the hardiest Aloes.

Tim, you should treat A. ecklonis as a die-back perennial, since it's a "grass Aloe". Let it die back to the ground, and provide some protection (i. e. mulch). It should resprout in the spring/summer.

we'll find out how the Aloe does since I have 2 outside inside my Yucca protection 'tubes'. We'll see if they can return.
