Since joining, I have kept going on and on whenever we discuss taxonomy that we need modern DNA-based research.
Finally, someone is doing it!
This paper shows exactly what I want to see done for such mysteries as Sabal "Riverside", "Louisiana" "Birmingham" and anything to do with Trachycarpus.
This one is on the mysterious Sabal "Brazoria" and shows that it is a hybrid of minor and palmetto, not mexiana, and that the hybrdization occurred thousands of years ago (i.e., is natural vs. something breeders did). They come to the edge of calling it a new species formed by hybridization but were not quite that brave and so left it (for now?) as Sabal xbrazorienses.
