Your palms are very nice. I wish that I could grow them here without winter protection.

The park is excellent. Where in South Carolina is it?

You don't have to be crazy to grow palms in Alberta..... But it helps

Great pics Laaz. I planted a small P. theophrastii this year (yours are considerably larger) and it's managed some cold temps (19.5f - 20.5f) and looks fine. If I'm ever through SC I'll look you up.

Cheers, Barrie.

Who works for Time Warner Cable???
I work for Cox Communications. If it is you Laaz, what do you do there. I supervise all the Contractor work in the Construction dept. When a new housing development goes in, I supervise the guys digging the trenches and attaching the lines to the poles. I spent 10 year in the Construction dept. and loved it, but I am getting too old to hump poles  . I also travel a lot to supervise storm breaks: Grand Forks, North Dakota (Flood), Northern Oklahoma (Ice), Western Missouri (snow), Pensacola, Florida (Hurricane Ivan) and when the streets become passable, Eastern Colorado & Western Kansas next week maybe.

Kansas I work for Time Warner. I'm a service tech for the online / phone side of things. Not many poles to clime here, almost everything is underground... Great pay & benefits. I get a lot of Palms while I'm out in the field as well as loads of seed.

Cali from my experience P. theophrastii is probably the most cold hardy of the date palms. We don't get very cold here, but the first year they were in the ground we had a night @ 17 F and not a bit of burn. The Silver had some burn & the Cali fans had major burn.

I have 10 Senegal's I'm going to put in the ground in the spring.

SCREW THAT!!!  You have to have A LOT more brains to do what you do thatn what I do. I really really look up to you catv phone techs as you have a lot to know and alot to remember and a lot of in home stuff.
I just couldn't deal with the people side of things after being in the homes for about 4-5 years. I wanted to be on the side where I had little to no customer contact, but still outside and staying in shape.
A dream come true would be to work at what I do now, but in S.C. and walking thru fields of wild minors and such.

I really like what I do. Like I said great money great job & my total bill every month for Cable / Broadband / Phone service is $20. Yes they make us pay $20 for the phone, but it is unlimited long distance to the USA & Canada.

We have wild stands of S. Minor, S. Palmettos, Needle & Saw Palmettos. Also many Yucca's and different cactus... We usually only have 3-5 nights a year where we go below freezing. Today it is almost 80 F...

Butia ID

Post by Barrie »

Laaz,
The Butia that are shown with little or no curve in the leaf is called Butia capitata var. 'Strictor'. I believe I have the spelling correct. Those are great pics Laaz! Sure looks like a great place to live. I'm not so sure about the summer humidity coupled with the heat. Heat alone is fine, but the humidity is draining. Here, summers have reasonably low or moderate humidity levels.

Cheers, Barrie. [/i]

Laaz ... I'm just up the hill (235' elev.), and a mile from the Ocean beach. Great place to walk the dogs and to cool down in summer. It's amazing how much warmer it gets at my place. It can be 75 at the beach and low to mid 80s at my place.

Cheers, Barrie.

Laaz,
Did you grow those Phoenix theophrastii from seed? If so, how long do they take to put out split leaves? Do you know if they are specimens from Crete or Turkey?

Steve I bought them two years ago as one gal plants. The photo is from last spring, they are quite a bit larger than that now. Last time I was up at Stan Mckenzies he had quite a few for sale @ $20 each I believe. If your interest try contacting him through his website, he's a really good person to deal with. His site is http://www.mckenzie-farms.com

I have a P. Theophrastii also and they seem to grow very fast. I bet if you get a gallon size it wouldnt be long before its a 10 gallon or 15 gallon size. What do you think Laaz?

I would agree. Mine are in the ground & are now about 30 gal size or better. The largest is over 4 ft tall.

10 Gal. Needles I picked up yesterday @ $25 each. Nice fat trunks & suckers coming out in all directions.

Also saw this sitting in the corner and grabbed it. It is a Livingstonia with variegated leaves, first I have ever seen one of these variegated. I will plant this in the yard in March.

Nice buy Laaz! For $25 that's a steal. I'm not sure why Needle palms aren't available here generally speaking, since they'd be fine in our climate. I guess the nurseries can't think past Trachycarpus. Most have tunnel vision and think in profit terms rather than new selections and educating their customers.

Cheers, Barrie.

Barrie you are correct. The same place has 7 gal. @ $50 each I think someone messed up on pricing. Needles would do great in your zone.
