Huge PDP-Worth it?

Post by F1aReD »

Today me and the W were driving and I saw atleast 10 palms tree's surrounding a yard. In shock, (we are in Massachusetts) I'm like ARE THOSE PALM TREES?! They were as tall as the house they were next too, much much taller than me. We turned around and it turns out this place is a local Landscaping business. I stopped and asked the lady if they were for sale or were just decoration (I thought maybe they were even fake, who knows)

I was in complete shock once again after she told me they were only US $79  I thought she was gonna say $179. They were beautiful and looked amazing! Think they are worth it? I don't know much about them, and I don't even know if they'd fit in my front porch! 8) They all had 3 trunks. Someone else stopped and asked if they were Annuals or Perennials, and how long could they be by the pool before they died. :? I feel bad for them. She said they were selling quickly, probably will mostly die come next winter.

I was sorely tempted by a similar offer--tall PDP for $90 (incl. tax). They were trucked up from Florida, as I assume yours was.
I didn't buy one as my pick-up truck died en route. :(
Big cheap palms always tempt me. I can get a 14' tall queen palm for even less. Alas, no truck....
The PDP could probably fit indoors for winter, right? If so, and you have access to a truck, I say go for it. --Erik

Yeah, I expected you to say that you were at Bill's house!

PDP's need to be inside for winter...IMHO...I've even lost one outside in summer!
And even inside, they can be touchy.

Hell, go see Bill in Mass.
You'll go ga ga over his stunningly beautiful and virtually indestructible Waggies and Washies and Trachies.

Erik- That sucks! Did you ever fix the truck or is it dead for good? Don't tell me its a Chevy

Jim & Barb- I've already seen Bill! Thats where I got my first palm from! The only reason I am considering a PDP is because these ones are about 8 ft tall, 10 min away, and only $79, Anyone selling that same size would be well over $100, which is the typical asking price. Right? :?

Yes, a Chevy--and with only 193,000 miles, many towing an over-weight trailer.
I'm going to get another Chevy, but a 3/4 ton model.
The size and price you are describing are the same as the ones on offer here. If your venfor has bottle palms, get those--mine look fantastic.
And if you get back to Bill's please take photos.

Eric - if you were driving a ford, you wouldnt have even gotten that far :P LOL

Flared - PDP are awsome. I bought one, so root bound, the roots were imbedded into the pot. There were 2 in a pot, and there was no way i could untangle them. I convinced HD to give me some money off, seeing as the poor thing was in sort of bad shape ( the palm itself looked immacculate!). So i brought it home, potted it up, and it was outside in -3C, wasnt hardened off at at, and was stressed from the repotting. The thing TOOK OFF!, didnt burn in the sun, showed NO stress after 2 days from repotting, and grew just as well in my house 6 feet away from any window, by my furnace vent. It put out 4 leaves on eat plant.

They are hardy to zone 9 reliably, so i wouldnt plant it outside, but they do SO well inside and out in my experience, id reccomend these babys to anyone!

I payed 20 bucks for one 4 feet tall, if your ancy id get one!

PS - check for scale, ive read quite a few things stating that lots of people have gotten them, only to find them infested with scale and beetles ( especialy if they are from florida)

An 8 foot tall PDP for $79?
Excellent deal, go for it.

Was just about to say "I can tell that you're not in Canada..." until I read Jesse got a 4-footer for 20 bucks.

Maybe it's just BC where we get hosed...oh yeah, BC = Bring Cash

I want to disagree with one thing, Jesse. I do not think PDP are zone 9, despite all I've read saying that they are. My trio all had spear pull last October after a brief exposure, in the ground, to 26 F. They've recovered nicely but I won't let that happen again. I'm going to baby them like the tropicals they are.

Im just stating what ive read, and experienced myself. Mine was hit with -3, ( and another night or 2 below 0) and it looked perfectly fine.

TBH, lots of sites ive seen rate it to zone 8B :S, even I know that is really unlikley.
