Tim,
fantastic!

My lone T. "takil" (= naini tal) was in a pot in the greenhouse that stayed warm through January, but then got to +8 F on that "colder than the south pole" morning (Feb. 10).
Spear pull, and looking awful now. Pretty iffy on survival. So, count your blessings. --Erik

I started the Trachycarpus takil from seed purchased from rarepalmseeds.com back in 2000 or 2001. Most people believe the takil seed offered by RPS back then was really 'Nanital'.

It was and yours is for sure Nainital-or at least not Takil.

Takil has a very neat crown area and very tightly wrapped
trunk fibers more similar to what you would see on a young
Latisectus or even Martianus.

The long strap like ligules evident in your picture rule it out
as Takil.

Check out the almost burlap like trunk fiber on Takil, the triangular
ligule shape and enormous amounts of tomentum on this excellent
example of a mature Trachycarpus Takil.

It does doesn't it!

Some serious tomentum on the trunks-even as babies the
seedling leaves have a light fuzz around them as well as the stems.

I have a feeling Takil is going to be a very special (Trachy)palm and
will end up living up to all the hype that was going around about them
10 years ago,it kind of died out with the whole Nainital fiasco but there
is no doubt these-now available -Takil, will be different.

Takil look like the grand daddy of them all!

Tim, that's one nice looking palm for just coming out of winter!
And only 10 yrs old from seed?
Sheesh...master grower, you.

Not much trunk lean for a Naini Tal...maybe a cross?  (couldn't resist that)

Nice job overwintering Tim.

Jim,

I hope takil is hardier....anyone offering the real ones?

Barb,

they 'leaned' big time when young. It appears to be growing out of it. Last summer the trunk stilll had a little lean.

Here it is in 2008 when planted in the garden.....hard to tell from the view, but there are a load more leaf petioles growing towards the lawn.

Yup, I can see the lean there and, as you say, petiole count usually proves it without an obvious lean.

I still can't believe how much it's grown since you started it from seed.
Man!
Whatever you're doing, keep doing it.

Tim

I found a few people that got seeds from Europlams and bought/traded for seedlings.

Europalms is the only place I trust for real Takil seeds, they will come up 2 ridgers,
instead of 4 like Nainital or Fortunei, etc.

Bill in MA's plants grow 3x faster than mine! I really do nothing....we get loads of rain every month of the year......I'm sure this helps. I fertilize 1x per year.....typically too busy.
