Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

At least they left them all summer, hopping they would come back. When I was there earlier this year, one was pushing up a leaf, must have had fungus. The trunks were very solid. I think the very wet winter did more damage than the cold? I think they would still be there if they where trachies

W.filifera Hagerman

Post by Okanagan desert-palms »

Aaron I noticed on your first post on these W.filifera that they had been protected up until last winter because they had grown to big. How old were they total years? I see a dome in the one photo is this what they used for protection and artificial heat every year until last? Really such a shame to see them cut on the ground like that.

John, they were in that dome in the back ground. I don't know how old they are? This is the first year I have been to that particular place. The big dome was air-conditioned when I look in-side, so I guess it also has heat in the winter?

I know about the palms, because I have seen them in a few adds, and the last add looked like the palms were touching the side of the convention-dome, it was clear they had no more room to grow.

I hope they try again with some trachies, I think they wood have good luck with them. The place is a hot springs, when I felt the ground it was kind of warm, you can see the hot pipes tapped over the spring. The palms were not far from the springs, I really think if it was not so wet this last winter and spring they would still be there. :)

I think your absolutly right, a Trachy would probably THRIVE there. If there is one thing I have learned in the year I have been in this hobby, it's that Trachies LOVE the cool and HATE the heat. I'de love to see them try an older Trachy.

Trachy heat

Post by Barrie »

Trachycarpus fortunei don't mind heat of shorter duration. A week of 90F+ is fine but not the relentless heat in the desert SW. These palms do very well in the PNW.

Cheers, Barrie.

T.fortunei and humidity

Post by Okanagan desert-palms »

Barrie just a question regarding T. fortunei and heat. I see all the time how well they do in North and South Carolina and other areas in the southeast with summer heat over 90 for much longer duration than Idaho. Do you think they do better there because of the humidity factor vs desert dry heat.

Quite likely

Post by Barrie »

John ... I think you've got a point. I don't think low humidity and heat (desert) are the best conditions for T. fortunei.
There is however decent ones grown in some parts of Northern Texas, and it's my understanding it's quite dry and hot during the summer there. I'm sure they never look their best though.

Cheers, Barrie.

I know I have seen a few large ones in Las Vegas, and hot and dry goes hand in hand there :)

Fremont street in Vegas has numerous trachies. They don't look to bad but the ones here in the PNW look alot better.

Yes, you are right Wes and so is Kansas, they do like the cooler humid climate. Just letting people know that it is possible to grow them in some of the warmer drier places. However, I have never seen one in Phoenix or Yuma that I can think of. :)
