I think I might travel back and forth between Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Or I might just winter in the south? I don't know for sure? But this I do know, I will have lots of palms and other cool stuff and nice winter weather.
I wonder how many of us will travel, stay put, or move to a warmer country.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

I like it just fine right here, 10 o latitude south of where W and I grew up
We might move down to the Texas gulf coast in a few years if we can find jobs there.
We hope to retire in Belize, where our meagre social security checks will go a lot farther than they will up here.
The Virgin Islands is what I'm aiming for, I'd like to get a small boat and cruise around the area . I've got time to figure out the details. I'd like to keep a house in Massachusetts for the summer though if possible

I'm sure you have already started to save for retirement, but for all the younger people out there. Every year earlier you can start to save is like doubling your money at the time of retirement.

Given the pitiful state of our finances, I'm guessing we'll live in a hut made of fronds of Attelea cohune; Sabal mauritamius leaves being out of our budget.

Poor or not I'm still going to the VI for a month or two, I'll rent if I have to, crime in St Thomas in 25 years who knows? Second choice east coast Fla. half way down at least. Looking for a lot this year as a backup plan, someone must be looking to sell
Bill
By the way I like the East coast of Fla because of the waves, really pretty to look at if you can't move all that fast

In 14 years i will be 56 and done. We are looking at Naples Melbourne FL and Corpus Christi TX. We want a Cheap condo beach front for 160k. Have found some nice ones in the daytona area . i like how warm Corpus Christi is in the winter myself but Fl is a bit cheaper..
TerdalFarm wrote:Oh! I guess I assumed Corpus was less expensive.
Florida is cheap cheap right now if you buy on the west or north side and you buy out of town. Who wants to be in town (not I) I would want my own jungle.

Holy word Bill! It's only 9 F in Mass right now...UGH!!!!!
Yeah Mike! pretty cold here!! 3 needles and 5 sabals are still unprotected!!! Plus about 25 3 gal trachies in my driveway
Needles and sabals looked mint as soon as the sun hit them!!! How are your palms doing? I'm getting ready to give them over head protection from moisture, no heat though. I bet they come out mint here!!! You'll never see 4f there, and I bet 2 days below freezing before that event would outright kill most of your unprotected yard.
It's been some time since you've seen single digits followed low 20's for a long time. I bet my baby figs will still make it with no protection to. I've seen yours

It's pretty cold here, but not like taht although the fish pond and lake is alreay frozen over: early for us. Bananas are cut back and myuulched and covered...Palms doing ok, I also brought a lot of stuff indoors and wussied out and dug up my fvorite trachy and keep it ont he porch (chilly there too) I just don't want to lose another youn g one like last year.....
wussied out and dug up my favorite trachy and keep it on the porch (chilly there too)
Mike, but now cold will get at the roots easier, through the exposed (above ground) pot.
IMHO, a bright spot in an unheated garage would probably be better for a Trachy recently dug up/potted.
Barb
I'm sorry I should have been specific, I call the indoor porch room the "porch".....Sunny and never lower than 50 in there at night....in the 60's and seventies during sunny days... A real lifesaver for storing plants....
BTW Do any of you feed your palms in winter or just let them be????
I give warmer palms a very mild feed in the winter with every watering.
Geez, All of us Fla. people need to retire farther south. Coral gables 31f tonight, guess no good Fairchild Gardens pictures for ya'll again this year. It frosted 2 days before I got there last year and everything was crapping out. I hope it holds out this year for some good pictures. I might have to blend last years with this years
Today I would say Sarasota/Siesta Key Florida at least for 5-6 months of the year. The gulf waters are warm and the location is far enough south to grow Coconut Palms.
