Thanks to all the southerners for sending up the warm air this week! 67f today! Got to cut the grass and finish up covering my palms for the winter. Felt like I should be uncovering them. I took a few pics and a short video.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Scotty, you are way ahead of me.
I'm glad you enjoyed the weather. The jet stream dipped down so it is cold here.
I'll start my own palm hut thread so I don't step on yours.

Erik.... I am ahead of you but the winter weather is closer to me than you though! So I wouldn't be too worried yet!! I'm sure you'll be done in time for the real cold!

Nice job. My trachys are still blowing in the breeze and I won't touch them until we start having sub 32 highs during the day. December? :)

Scotty, love the reference to a locomotive
Placing your seedlings inside is a good idea too.
I should rustle up some water jugs, haven't ever used them inside the palm hut.

Everything looks good, ready for winter.

Re your thermocube(s), are they plugged in at the plant end of the extension cord (inside the protection)? or at the house end (exposed to storms etc. on an exterior wall).
I've never used a thermocube but one is on its way.

thanks for pics and video.

I don't blame you for leaving them out Tim! The longer the better. I just wanted to get things done while we still had nice weather. Any snow for you yesterday??

Barb.. My thermo cube is right on my trachy trunk with the lights. If the thermo cube stays outside the protection it will keep the lights on with the temps outside not in. I tried them the other night when it went below zero. The lights stayed on for about 20min, then shut off since the enclosure warmed up past 45. I'm sure once winter comes it won't shut off that much, except during the day.
Does that help?

Looking good man. I'm hoping for a mild one this winter, I don't have protection on anything except the banana so far (and 0 time to do it!).

FYI- My palnted Aucuba are all officially dead... It took 3 years though.

Scotty,
Thanks for "thermocube for dummies" info.
Now that I think about it (duh!), of course that's the way it should work 'coz it's a thermometer :?

I'm still not keen on the 45F upper limit, think that's too warm for a Trachy.
And my wallet...

RIP to your Acuba Paul..

Barb.. Are you getting the 35/45 or the 20/30?? Are you using the thermo cube on to your space heater or are you switching to lights??

I appreciate it, too. I'll order mine today.

W and I watched your video together this morning. Thanks for all the tips and tricks.

But no, she won't let me leave her Washy out all winter!

Will those seedlings stay in the palm hut all winter or come indoors?

I ordered the 35/45...hasn't arrived yet.
Getting my "mileage" on the $30 shipping, LOL.

Heard that a place in Kelowna called Princess Auto ( :? ) might have thermocubes so I'll head there tomorrow.

Planning to use thermocube on space heater (Trachy, space heater, thermocube inside hut (thanks! LOL), extension cord to outdoor house outlet on a GFI.
The space heater has a thermostat but my remote temp reader inside the hut blanks out at least once a day, thought I'd gain improved control of temps inside the hut.

On another thread, Bill suggested I set the space heater on medium heat and let the thermocube control that.
That's probably a better idea than what I was going to do...setting it on High for the thermocube to turn it on and off.

By next weekend, BC interior will have first arctic low with temps really dropping :x

Scotty,

Had rain and 45 yesterday. Four hours to my northwest (Minneapolis, MN) had a foot of snow. Today it is cloudy, windy and 38 outside. Coldest temp this entire week looks to be 25 Thursday night, but each day warms above freezing. No trachy protection needed! :)

Barb

I have found the best place to put your thermocube is out as far as the
farthest leaf from the center of the plant, last year I had mine on my Washy's
spear and the outer leaves got burnt.

Good point, Jim, thanks. Will do.
Probably a lower leaf too.

Barb

I am thinking to put mine on the north side about a third of the way up(inside).

Scotty, enjoyed your video and it looks like we have similar carpenter skills
although I guess your better because building a locomotive car is outside my
skill-set! :D

I like the idea of putting jugs of water in your leaf cover-so to speak.

I noticed you have some areas in your train car without insulation on the walls
and (maybe?)around the door?

I am trying some bubble-wrap this year as it worked good on my -2F Trachys last year.

I was thinking you could staple a couple layers on some on the walls in the areas in your
big hut to finish them off and overhanging the edge of the door/hatch?-just a thought.

Good luck with everything this winter! :)

Thanks Jim.. yeah I got lazy and didn't buy enough insulation board. I like the idea of some plastic over the hatch area to keep in the warmth!

Thanks..
