Mid-Summer Yard Pictures Massachusetts

Post by BILL MA »

Hello All,
Here's some pictures from around the yard from a few days ago. Summer has be very nice in the Northeast this year and the plants and tree are loving it.

This is the front of my house, it's pretty close to the road and it attracts lots of curious people who want to now how a yard in New England can look like it belongs in the South.

Image

Image

One of the my three washies that endured the winter last year has exploded with huge growth this year, the crape myrtle was a little late flowering for some reason this year, it might have had to much nitrogen. It's full of flowers now so better late then never right.

Image

As you can see the bark is really starting to flake off now, the cinnamon color is really nice looking.

Image

Here's My three trachys, the one one the right has been in the ground for four years now and has really grown a ton, the trunk is just about 6 feet now. Just last week I did a little trimming so I could see the trunks better and cut off 30 fronds. Not to bad for Massachusetts, I like seeing the trunks much better I decided. In front of the trachys is a really nice sabal birmingham that I got from Gary in New Bern, It's put out three full fronds so far since Feb. it's faster then my minors? In front of that is a hardy pink oleander that also went through last winter, It's just about ready to flower now. Velutina in the background is doing very well and has flowered once so far, another is very close now.

Image

This is looking into the backyard where I have some of the tropical plants I've been selling this year. The bananas in the back are 13 feet so far and growing faster and faster everyday, I'm hoping for a flower this year. I kinda have a little banana cave in between the patch that people love to look in. These washys are doing well to and they also went through last winter.

Image

Image

Image

This is the west side of my house there's two tuscarora's there and some new basjoo nanas I got from Sean at Chilly Palms. There's also a large butia some more oleanders, indian hawthorns, and a 65 gal. minor on that side that I didn't get pictures of. Sorry!

Image

Image

In the driveway more stuff I have for sale, I need more land! Some butias, yellow nanas, gardenias, agristart nanas for next year, and a bunch more things.
That calidora on the wall is 7 feet plus, one of my favorites!

Image

Image

And to save some of the best for last my newly acquired princeps. Thanks so much Steve from N. Bama and Ryan from Texas!!! I can't wait to plant them when there big enough.

Image

Thank you all for looking.

Bill

Thanks Canadianplant!
Stuff has really picked up the pace lately it's really cool to watch grow when it's like this.

The colocasia has not seen frost in three years I keep bringing it inside. It's 7 feet tall right now, this variety is more on the slower side I hear. Good plan on bringing yours in you'll be glad you did!

Thanks for the comments,

Thanks Mike!
I kinda wonder sometimes if the plants are insane or if it's me

Penny,
Thanks for the comments, hard work, TLC it's all good, I could work in the year all day and love every second of it :D

I do try to take the best care of them as possible though, and they sure do reward me accordingly!!!

Duncan,
Thanks a lot man, it was kinda hard for me to cut off those 30 fronds the other day because they had nothing wrong with them but the palms look better now and can get better sun and ventilation so it all part of keeping up with them. It took me several beers to actually start chopping though. They will be healthier in the long run :D

Thanks for the comments,
Bill

Here's another comment, then:
I'm jealous! You live well north of me but have much nicer plants.
I'll post photos later this week, but it'll be a few years before I catch up to where you are now. --Erik

They just keep pumping the leaves out like bananas

Man I keep reading princeps horror stories, no wonder there so expensive it seems like everyone kills them. I don't know if I should water or not

Bill,
I started a new thread in "photo gallery". No, doesn't compare to what you, Jim and Scott (etc.) have accomplished but it is a start. --Erik

Bill

They are fine as long as they dry out between,my Princeps with spear-pull is already working on a second
leaf-recovery appears to be quick in hot weather.

In winter I let my (esp small) indoor trachys dry out and only water when it will be sunny for a few days after,
this dries the top layer out quick-very important with seedlings/Princeps.

Looks good, like a jungle! I could not imagine protecting that many palms for an upcoming winter. And my wife wouldn't let me!

Those are some awsome pics of how well everything is doing. How are sales going? I`ve done better than ever this year with people buying mostly Trachy`s and planting them after they see mine planted. Their neighbors are already asking about how they can get some for next year as I`m sold out of the 15 gal. I`ll post some pics of some miracle large butia c`s that have sprouted new fronds from spear pull after a year of sleep "amazing". Keep up the good work.

Looking good! I really like Crape Myrtle bark, too bad it isn't hardy (without protection) up he and I've had to use replacements... Ah well.

It's actually not all that bad I'm starting to get better at it. Plus in a weird way it's kinda fun? Can't really explain that one. Winters going to come anyways so might as well enjoy the palms before they go into there houses right, what better way then protecting them.

Hey John,
That's Great that your having a good year with sales! Things have been going good here too, people are finally starting to find out about the stuff I have here. Next year will be a much better year for me I'm sure, first few years are always the hardest. People are buying up the trachys left and right here to and planting them. I only have a few left!

Can't wait to see pictures of the butia and here the story about it.

Thanks for the comments!

I haven't seen much from you this year, how is everything going for you?

Crepes are really cool, I hope they keep on preforming year after year for me. The Natchez is in a good spot so will see.

I've never seen Arbutus anywhere around here before, is there a specific type that is hardier then another?

Bill, holy crow look at that tropical jungle!!! :D :D
Next year your house will look like a bungalow.

You give us all hope that our palms can put out that many fronds in one season.

I bet all traffic comes to a halt in front of your place.

Man, those new princeps are nice.
Thanks for those great pics.

PS--you'll have to move furniture out of your dexter room this winter.

Barb,
Thanks so much! This year has been really great for the growth of everything here. The palm hut don't fit again already  The protection just gets bigger and bigger, it's a challenge in it self. (a fun one) My oldest trachy is putting out four leaves at a time now which is pretty crazy since I only juiced it twice this year, the first one in spring was just a little bit too.

I'm excited about the princeps, I can't wait to put them in the ground in a few years. Steve in Alabama has some really nice palms for sale on ebay that's where I got them :D

As for the dexter room, it's getting bigger for sure! The basement is going to be pretty packed this winter

Thanks again!
