The D.edules are getting more and more blue!

Double caudex...really took off this year.

And the P.lamerei will be scraping the ceiling next year.

Your cycads look better than any on eBay.

Most of the Dioon edule seedlings were started from seed labelled " No. Mexico" A bit slower growing with a nice bluish tint

This Sago has done well in it's deep container, (trashcan

and the Dioons are growing their winter coats......

Looking good as always Steve. I'm really thinking I want to get into cycads when I get some more room. Is the Dioon edule the one that's hardy to around 0F? Dry of course.

Bill, They can take more cold than the Sagos, but not sure to what extent. This article says about 14F before leaf burn, and single digits for trunk damage.

That sounds like a pretty easy temperature to get them through the winter with not much protection. I was thinking 0f was pretty low, you know how some sites are pretty unrealistic when there trying to sell you stuff. Your figures seem much more likely. Have you ever considered planting one out at your place?

Bill, Here is one more reference that should prove reliable,

Hardiness: USDA Zones 8 - 11. Mature and established plants have been reported to tolerate temperatures down to 9ºF (-12.8ºC) for four days. Dioon edule is one of the most cold hardy cycads.

I spent this year planting Palms

Going to put a couple Cycas, Dioon, and maybe some Zamias in next spring.
My plan is to heavily amend with lava rock to about 24", (our frost line), the air spaces in the rock should provide some additional insulation, and solve moisture issues. After that, a small shelter & minimal heat should be all it takes.

I tried a sago,croaked on the 3rd winter,but no heat at all.
Maybe I'd have better luck with a Dioon.

I think it was just the cold,it was planted southeast corner of the house,right next to a sabal Minor,both were covered with polytuf plastic,to keep moisture out,wasn't sealed air tight,but enough to block the cold north wind.we had temps down to 0 for a couple days,sabal minor made it just fine.but they can take it down to zero.

I am SOOOOO stopping with Palms and just collecting Cycads now. First week in Jan and I have lost many many palms, yet my cycads seem to have been alright. I cut the leaves off all my Kings in hope that will stimulate new growth this Spring with my manure help in March.

My Willy's have not skipped a beat. I LOVE THEM!!

My Big Tait, I cut the leaves off in hope of new growth soon.

All n all, my cycads seem to be fine but we will see later. Palms, NO WAY!
