Summer in September this year! Last 13 days in a row have been sunny and warm. Next 7 look to continue the trend. Here are some pictures for your enjoyment. I don't know why, but I really have fallen in love with robustas. Too bad they weren't hardy to 5 or 10F.
Now I have two questions for you guys. In the 2nd to last pic, if you look in the bed, you'll see a really small orinoco in the back. When I planted the corm in spring, the main plant didn't continue to grow; it died back to the ground. It shot up this pup that grew fast for a month, then totally stopped growing too. It's sat like this since basically July 1st. What would cause this? Should I chuck the corm at the end of the season? Second question. If you look at the robusta in the 2nd to last pic, it's only put one frond out this summer. I marked the spear and it has grown 1.5 inches in the last 7-10 days. It was planted May 15th. Its trunk was extremely moist and soggy when I got it from the nursery. Is this thing healing, declining, putting out roots, or what? I really want better growth next summer, as my other robusta is working on its 9th frond right now.
Hey nice property!! Where are located?? As for your washie mine lookes very similar. I planted it in early july. I have had one new spear pop up since, but there is one on the way right now. I have had to cut of two spears which kinda whent brow like the way one of yours looks. I think that is normal.. The tips are brow on all leaves pretty much and some yellowing.. I think it alright.. How often have you been watering it??
I live in Saukville, WI. For protection I plan on using boxes made with 2x2 frame, lined with doubly poly, and foam on the outside. Heated with a 750 watt space heater on a thermostat to 50F. I'll remove the foam during the day on the S and W exposures to allow sunlight in.
Wxman, when I planted my orinocos this year they really took some time to get growing. I think they might be putting out roots but I'm not sure. It's strange that they started growing then stopped though. I would still dig them up and try to store them anyways why not right one less thing to buy in the spring.
As for the robusta I'm sure you have read the same stuff on the other board as I have about declining robustas that rot from the inside and appear to be ok and just crap out. I hope this isen't the case I guess you'll know more when you dig that guy up. Your grass looks nice and green do you have to water it much? Man do you have a pile of snow there, kinda scary to see!
Thanks for posting those!! I need a good visual. Did you find your electricity bill went up a lot? I guess with the extrat foam insulation the heater should't be running as much.. I think your climate is similar to mine in Kingston. When do you usually start the protection? Sorry for all the questions..
Electric bill went up $60 per month last winter. Was crazy with just plastic. I plan on protecting my washy before the first freeze. Trachy probably sometime in November.
Wow, $60! But I guess that's for two enclosures.. I was thinking of leaving just plastic on the front (a few layers) then insulation for the top, back and sides to keep more heat in so the heater is not running so often.. I was looking at space heaters today.. With a thermastat they seem to be going for about 60 bucks.. Didn't seem too bad..
Got my space heater for $15 at Walmart. Ever think of removable foam on the sides you leave plastic? That way you can screw it back on at night when it's dark out anyway.
