any good Palm seed sources
I thought it might be time for me to try some more seeds. Any good sources around for Needle Palm seed or other hardier types of palms or yucca?
Have many folks here used rarepalmseeds?
Thanks in advance.

RPS is excellent, also try e-bay,I always look there first for the cheapest prices.
If you are looking for rare palm seeds go with an experienced seller like RPS,it's a drag to find out after 5+ years that you got a common palm instaed of a rare one from an inexperienced seller-

Ron you might want to also try rareseedsource.comseedrack.com. I have always got great seeds from both of these suppliers.

There's a selection of Yucca (and Agave) from Desert Northwest. I've dealt with Ian before and he's very knowlegable and has good deals. Here's his seed list ... http://www.desertnorthwest.com/catalog/seed.html

I may have some extra needle palm seeds next month. I will also have quite a few 1 gallon size.

Hey- I just got an order from Europalms.be, good serive, quick and better prices then rarepalmseeds.com.
I second the use of the desert Northwest, Ian is a great source not only for seeds, but also of information. I strongly reccomend ordering through him!

Thanks again, everyone. I really do need to try some other types of palms here. My Trachycarpus f seedlings have made it through three winters now.
I thought I lost my Sabal minor but found one seedling still struggling to come back after our horrible last winter.
I usually just mulch everything in deeply with leaves though I have built enclosures in years past.
I'll check out some of these other sites.
Thanks.....

They're just dinky little seedlings so I've never take a picture of them but I should and then learn how to post on here.... must read the fax on that. Mind when I looked at the one clump this morning it does look like some of them have gained a bit of growth.
I'll pm you, John.
I agree Penticton is probably a bit better zone wise but I sure hear and see about many plants there that we should be trying here. I keep wishing the city would use Musa basjoo here but I've yet to see good specimens here. Even mine are under a foot but come back year after year. I must move them away from the Japanese Maple with which they compete and the same goes for my sad palms and every other plant in my backyard for that matter.

Ron,
We would all enjoy your pictures, small or not. They all start off small so even better to have before and after pictures.
I use photo bucket, it's so easy. All you do is click on upload images and video, select the image you want from the folder you keep you pictures in. Then copy the Img code and paste it into the forum where you type. Simple as that.

Right I'll try to take some photos of my seedling clumps tomorrow. Yes, clumps.... sigh... I know they should be separated but I'm scared they'll be too late to re-establish before winter. Maybe I can get a shot of the lone Sabal minor seedling too or someone can gently tell me it's dead.
Oh... I should say I'll take them later today.
Night,
Ron.

I've had good luck with the Alligator Alley seeds in the past. I reccomend taking them out of their packages when they arrive and spraying them with raid to kill any potential Palmetto weevils that might be in the seed! I had perhaps 70% germination with their McCurtain seed.
As for McCurtain being hardier... Not sure. I planted one regular and one McCurtain last spring. I currently have one regular recovering from spear pull and no McCurtain. I know that means nothing, but it's interesting nonetheless!

I've got an order ready for him but noticed his seed list hasn't been updated for awhile. Is there a more current list I wonder?
I've emailed him but I'm sure he is busy with all his work so hopefully he'll get back to me soon.

Next I'll work on a Europalm order. Yes, I'm rather methodical about these things.

I also like to use raid on my hair,it keeps bugs away and kills what ever is already living there!
It also smells about the same as hair spray, doesn't hold very well but I do not have bugs bothering me-

John, I'll think it over. I still have the list you sent me, though perhaps you've sold some of the palms listed already,Okanagan desert-palms wrote:Ron I have a couple left for sale 5 gal. 6 to 7 year old "Alligator Alley Oklahoma form" Sabal louisiana for sale next spring. and have been studying though them. Louisiana may be one I should try.
Thanks for letting me know.
I just finished bringing in all my Colocasia and my potted bananas and cannas tonight. Such fun.
I covered my Trachies for the chill tonight.
Sigh.... winter....

PS I do see plants would be much better to go with in some of the slower palms and I assume most of the hardier ones will be pretty slow this far north.

Ron in regards to being this far north latitude 49.5. We more than make up from being farther south by having warm spring weather and really hot summers ,gradual warm to cold temps to winter in the fall "except this weekend?"for the Sabal sp. especially. I have a Sabal minor planted this spring with my four Trachy`s. The trachy`s have seen -17c and have breezed through so far three years planted and two years.I`ll let you know how the sabal minor does this winter.
