Death of a palmetto

Oh well after 3 years my last sabal palmetto finally died. Its leaves are completely brown. Its been in decline ever since last year. I just found out popping in and out of miami in a few days driving anyone want anything back? Instead of in ground replacement for my dead palmetto Im gone bring something back I can keep in my 34" pots. That way I can easily move them to indoor warehouse at work over the winter.
Ill be towing a trailer so I can bring back some taller palms

Mike,sorry to hear your Palmetto canned it, I wish you better luck with the next one,I also think if your going to invest that much in a palm that size you should put some kind of soil warming system in to help the roots really get going,it just seems like a palm that size is challenged even in a warm climate to succeed.
I can't wait to see what the next palm you come up with,hope whatever it is it takes of for you!

It sucks that you lost the sabals.

Jim yes it was a challenge and it wasnt that expensive. I paid I think 150 bucks for it. It was cheaper than a washintonia that size. Now that I have warehouse storage space available to me I may just use massive pots. I am going there with an open mind. all my other palms or fine and pushing out new growth. This week I uncovered them and poured 5 gallons of miracle grow on each one.

Allen thanx it sucks but luckily it was just the one palm not the rest. What ever I choose it has to be able to handle the cold soil. My trachys and pindo are in the ground now a few years and have no problems with it.

Mike, sorry about the loss of your palmetto.

Looking forward to pics of your new one(s).

Good idea about storing them in the warehouse.
That means you'll be able to buy more tropical ones!

Hello barb !! This year my job let me store palms indoors in a heated and lighted old carwash its humid and a great spot. I dont know what Type of palm I might grab. I guess it will depend on the weight also. Ill post pics if I get s omething

Mike sorry to hear about that Palmetto. How did that Pindo palm do after the plastic protection opened up on you? I believe it was last winter or the winter before.

Well john The pindo id unfazed by the cold ground. Trachs sabal minors needles and pindos all doing great the sabal palmetto fried lol.

One of the things about growing palms this far north is that we naturally assume that when we lose one its from cold,I don't necessarilly think your palm died from cold,your protection was to solid!
I think you should stick another large palm in the ground like a nice fat washy,they are so rewarding with their fast growth habit!,then use your warehouse space to store massive banana plants that you can put back in the ground and hopefully get some nanars from,! whataya think?

Well jim I should have some banas one of these years I did store several corms with about 6ft of stem in the basement . Im hoping to see something lol. what ever it might be Im sure it will be interesting. I mean thats one the things that drives up northern growers right? As for the washy I might bring one back depends on price weight. I have some of those big pots so I I might bring a more tender palm back too and keep it indoors the during the winter like barb was saying a few posts back. Now the question is do you want me to bring you a washy back? or maybe something else? Im leaving today and looks like it might be for a few more days then I though

Mike thanks for the offer,I have a few more palms to put in this spring and maybe the odd cactus are 2,running out of room anyway! I also need to plan on protecting earlier or something,last year I already had 2 jobs going and the protection ended up being like a thrid job,so,not all that fun but sure worth it.
This year I am putting more effort into bulbs and other stuff that I don't need to protect, that will accent the palms,have a great trip!
