They look at Siberia's weather in the Fall to determine what'll happen in North America during winter.
Judging by December 08, they might be onto something
That forecast map looks to be right on,I have a lot more respect for predictions that are made before the event unlike some other forecast I've seen that came out after it was already happening!you don't get to call it a prediction unless you put it out BEFORE the event
So Far it is off for Edmonton. We have been averaging 10*C above average high temperatures with yesterday's high of 9*C being 18*C above average.
If we actually get close to the forecast high for today and tomorrow ( 16 & 18*C) even the warm winds will not be able to evaporate the moisture as the snow melts.
It has been a weird winter for us. Slightly below expected temps in the middle half of December and now sauna like heat.
I AM NOT COMPLAINING.

You don't have to be crazy to grow palms in Alberta..... But it helps
The MJO is getting ready to go into phase 1 and that is suppose to support a ridge over the southeast US. Hopefully this will come true as I wont see anymore sub-zero temps anymore.
Zone6b in Western New York
Last two winters: -2F and 0F Sofar this winter: -1F
Its seems like anytime we see warmer temps for a while we also see a split stream that fazes over the mid west and the east, get ready cuz it looks like the snow is going to start up again.
Allen, wow a 36 degree change for you folks! ouch.
We're gettin' colder too, but it's the persistent fog that's driving me crazy.
Gloomy and dark, haven't seen the sun in probably 10 days
Gonna go stand UNDER a High Kelvin lamp!
It has been bright and sunny all week. I wore a t shirt on Saturday & Sunday as the sun was so warm. Today it was a sweater under my parka with tuque, scarf and heavy gloves. I tried to shovel the skiff of snow but the wind drove me back inside. With the windchill the temp was in the low -40s*C.
But it is getting warmer (-22) and the wind isn't as bad. Maybe later.

I agree Barrie,we are around the corner now,avg temps begin to rise and daylength increases rapidly, almost to Feb,as far as I'm concerned the last winter month!
Today it got up to 3*C and rained gently most of the day. As a result, parking lots, side streets and sidewalks are glare ice as the ground temperature is well below freezing. The main streets are wet with nice sized puddles as the storm drains are mostly covered with packed snow and ice. While out shopping, I had to drive around 3 cars stalled in the middle of the street as they had hit a puddle and drowned their engines.
Today's rain helped set a new record for rain in January and should also set a record for the most rain on a single January day.
These amounts are nothing compared with the rain on the lower mainland and the Island but it will take at least a week to clear up/cover up the ice.
What a month. First +1 or 2*C; then -31*C; followed by +10*C; then -26*C and now +3*C.
No wonder I have another cold.

Here, or better yet, Nanaimo (Departure Bay) the nearest recording station, the average precipitation total for January is 126mm (5 inchs).
Yearly average is almost 37".
This January has been quite dry so far compared to average.
Our new record for rain in January is 19 mm. There is no new record for most rain any day in January as the city centre only got 4.5mm. The west end, where a TV station is located, got 7.5mm and we got about the same.
That doesn't seem like much but it translated into over 1/2 inch of ice.
