green or blue princeps?

Post by Islander »

I found this palm labelled princeps in the US. It has long petioles with some kind of tomentum(?). The leaves are pale green (it was in shade and did not look 100% happy) and the leaf undersides have the trademark powdery look but not as nice on some web images. My guess would be a green princeps but maybe someone can confirm it. I've seen small ones in Victoria but when I spotted this size I just had to get one. T. manipur can be purchased on Vancouver Island but not princeps (as far as I know). Is princeps tougher to germinate?

Not an expert, but with the bright white undersides of the leaves it looks like the 'white', or regular, princeps to me! I thought that the green form was just a hoax?
If you're looking for a Canadian source for princeps, broadway plants in St. Catherines has a few. They are small and expensive, due to the price of seeds as well as the difficulty of germination!

-I first wondered why that was but I asked palm society members here and abroad. Apparently there are different areas where they were found. The "blue" princeps is more showy. At least I got one to plant as my others (local sales) are tiny. It's about time because I've heard about princeps for years.

Thanks Paul but I knew about that place in Ontario. They probably get most of their orders from the Vancouver area. That's a good location because it's not too far from anyone in s. Ontario.

Enjoy the new year.
There should be more palms at English Bay.
