Favourite Trachycarpus

Post by Wes North Van »

I am undecided as to what trachycarpus I like better, fortunei or wagnerianus. I think I like waggies better when they are young especially when they have the curved fronds but I think a fortunei looks better as a mature palm. I am curious about your opinions.

I like the fortunei better but i don't have any wagnerianus palms so my opinion could change when i get some. :D You wouldn't happen to have some seeds would you? I recently bought some T. fortunei & S. minor seedlings from Joe on SSI but didn't get any wagnerianus.

Jay

I love fortunei's because of their cold hardiness. In my zone 7a, so I can't be as picky about what palms I can grow. T. fortunei is the most cold hardy and very attractive, so I would have to say its my favorite! :D

I like waggies better, they are just as cold hardy and and hold up better in windy conditions.
How do I post a Pic on this forum?

Welcome to the forum Dan. :D

To post photos you will have to have your images hosted somewhere like photobucket.com or your own server. You can then use the image urls provided by the image hosting service and insert them into your post. Hope this helps. :D

I prefer the waggies as they are shorter and I would be able to protect them better in winter.

You don't have to be crazy to grow palms in Alberta..... But it helps

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Shorter is better for protection.
I have only a Trachy and like its more robust look.
Looks a little "cleaner" to me than Waggies.

Wes, you should have requested!

Post by Islander »

You should have requested seed on this forum. Seed is available in Victoria (for purchase from a palm society member) and I have a few hundred from trees on Vancouver Island down to California. Note: only wag pollinated with wag. You know what... I'll hand you seedlings if your seeds fail. BTW, I purchased small specimens on Vancouver Island. I also purchased a small martianus after seeing a nice one in Victoria. I'm assuming that my older wagnerianus palms will produce in the next year or two. Another nice palm is a fortunei-wagnerianus cross. One of the nicest palms in Victoria. Tell me if you want T. campestris (one seed), Ceroxylon (random various) or Jubaea seeds. I think that it costs nothing to send seeds other than Jub. Jub you can pay postage but seed is free. T. campestris is one of the most amazing palms I've seen. I know of 4 seedlings in Victoria. It is indeed rare.

People who visit prefer wagnerianus over fortunei. It also looks great when it's small. I remember when I looked for T. fortunei palms and now people just give them for free. My biggest free palm was a 15 gal fortunei. Times have changed.

The city of Vancouver needs to plant more palms by the water.

Waggies

Post by Wes North Van »

Of the 20 seeds only three germinated. They are small seedlings right now. I have two 5 gallon waggies that I plan on planting outside this spring, (1 month from now) :D

I am planning on buying some waggie seeds from Jeff over in Victoria. I just keep forgetting to send off the money.

If you are offering seeds I would love to get them from you. That is very generous of you, thank you.

Send me a pm and I will send you my address.

Thanks again.

BTW I have a small t. campestris but I have it inside. I am not sure if it is ready to go outside yet.
What is your experience with them. Are they hardy enough to make it in Van or Vic?

Welcome to the forum islander!

Any pics you can post?
We "interior folks" love to see Coastal palms.

Wes, it's been a nice winter for your palms!
And yes, spring's only a month away for you folks. 8)

All of my palms look great. My tree fern looks like it is in the middle of summer.

Even my canna tropicanas are still standing, mind you they are in a perfect microclimate.
It has been a good winter so far. We still have to the middle of February before we are in the clear.

Wes, glad it's a mild winter. Your trachys are probably trying to push a spear!

Islander, very very nice Waggie, especially since width matches height.
