Hello to all and Happy New year. I found this form on the web and love all the information. I live in
Hendersonville, North Carolina in the blue ridge mountains. I think we are in zone 7a. I have 4 windmill palms, 2 pindo jelly palms, 1 needle palm, and hardy banana's. Our weather is turning cold over the next 3 days with low's in the teens. I have wraped up the pindo jelly palms for the cold temps. I am trying to send a picture of one of the jelly palms from summer
Welcome aboard tomj and happy new year! As you may already know, Butia capitata (Pindo) is quite out of range for a zone 7a region but many have wintered them with protection. It's sure a nice palm. Don't expect trouble with Trachycarpus fortunei (Windmill palm) unless temps dip below 10f for too long. Rhapidophyllum hystrix (Needle palm) is probably your toughest palm when established.
Thanks. I have 2 of the pino's they still look great. Very little leaf burn. I have them wraped up tonite
in a thermal planket. We have had nite time temps in the upper teen,s but wendsday's low is supose to be 14. I hope they make it. I got them at home depot in the spring,so I got the 1 year Warranty on them. Here is another pick of both of them.
I understand your concerns completely. I have a nice, healthy 6' Trachycarpus Fortunei which is a repacement for the smaller one I lost to some type of fungus last fall. I'm in Gadsden, Alabama in 7b and that cold snap is supposed to be about 19F here this Thursday morning with some pretty stout winds. I normally wouldn't be too concerned but that seems a little much for a tree which was only transplanted a little over a month ago. That's why I like this forum so much. There's lots of "been there - done that" folks here. Keep us posted.
Thanks Randy,
Winter weather temps swing wild here. Highs tomorrow around 28 low 14. Very cold through thursday nite then back up into the 50's low's upper 20,s. I am posting a picture of how I wraped the pindo's up. Crude I know but it seems to be working .Tom
If you have an old bed comforter I would throw that over it if you are going down that low. I would also be concerned with the moisture build up inside the plastic.
They do not like wet spears and they do rot
Also if you put a comforter around it you can also put Christmas lights in the middle of the comforter for extra heat.
When it warms up again I would uncover it.

Welcome to the forum, nice specimens you've got there.
Did I miss a pic of the 6 foot Trachy?
Protection wrapping...all it needs is an old wool sweater at very top.
Wool will let accumulated heat vent out, but will stop a cold draft from the top when it's windy.
