I don't know why this bugs me so much, but seeing the international airport ticker for Edmonton above the site here is a bad representation of the temperatures in Edmonton. They can be up to 10 degrees different at any point in time. How about putting up the municipal airport ticker?
The sticker is on this page and it would make me much happier about how cold people really think it is in Edmonton. Nobody lives at the airport, its 15km away and for some reason colder then everywhere around Edmonton or in Edmonton.
Many areas use this airport reading, Nanaimo does as well at the Cassidy airport. The Vancouver Island news (CHEK 6) reports those temperature readings as part of the current conditions. About 95% of the time is cooler than the other local areas but never 10 celcius (50 f) warmer like in Edmonton (that's huge), it's closer to a couple or 3c degrees warmer.
The weather network reports city centre, but our newspapers report international airport for past weather yet their predictions for the week are city centre ones....doesn't make too much sense if you ask me. I think the international airport is colder because of all the planes landing and pulling really cold air from the sky with them. Even cities an hour out are closer to Edmonton city centre temps than the airport is and its only 15 km out. I don't get it...either way we should change the ticker on this page....who can do that?
I understand what you're getting at.
Airports are invariably on flat low lying ground where cold air settles and stays.
Kelowna's like that too.
We're north of Kelowna airport but often 5 - 7 degrees warmer.
You made a good point.
Last week the Edmonton airport temps were something like -17 BRRRRRR!
But the city wasn't anywhere near that temp.
The readings vary between the 2 airports 3-5* in moderate wind; up to 10* with no wind; and almost no difference when there are 30+ mph winds. On occasion the international airport will get a different weather system than the city because of the river valley.
