Sorry to hear that Aaron. I just planted mine this year because I was tired of it not growing. I'm gonna run it through the gauntlet and see what happens. I didn't have a good place for it so its in a warm but wet microclimate in my yard. It appears to have survived the torrential downpour and stand...

I've sprayed mine with wilt proof so far the first 2 winters. It's only had to weather a zone 7b and 7a winter so far though. My E.B. was about the size of yours when I planted it. Being a larger size should probably help make it through the winter as well.

From what I've read DD Blanchard is more hardy than EB. My EB was drooping to the ground after the 18 inches of snow we just had. I was worried but it popped back up.

One of the banks here left one planted in the ground all winter. I was surprised how much cold it took before finally turning completely brown. I'd say it took down to the teens pretty easily.

wxman, I'm actually about 200 miles from Chicago in the center of the state. From what I've read on the internet, people have gotten Southern Mags in Chicago. I bought my Edith Bogue at a nursery here in Springfield. Another nursery close by ordered the BBB for me. I think it came from Monrovia. Sup...

I was wondering if I should tie up the leaves like Tim does. Thank you for the advice on the thermometers, I hadn't thought about people dropping them. I also glued styrofoam to the "roof" of the tub in hopes of keeping condensation from falling on the plants. I don't know if it's actually...

DOH! How did I misread that? I bought a remote thermometer for the needle palm but it wasn't working right so I took it back. I need to try again. I would imagine the temp was close to 2 degrees in the box because that was the night time temp. I noticed with that once the sun went down, the temp ins...

Could the soil have caused it to rot? Mine's in a mix of about 75% pea gravel and 25% sand. Maybe even higher percentage of pea gravel.

Barb, There's no extra heat source for the rostrata. I monitored the temp in the fall and it seemed about an extra 20 degrees (F) warmer under the tubs on a sunny day. This is the first winter outside for the rostrata, cacti, and agave. It's kindof a test year to see if it's worth making a larger de...

is that an opuntia phaecantha on the far right to the right of the yucca rostrata? If so do you know if it's a specific type. I've been trying to find one like that on coldhardycacti.com but I wasn't sure which one to order.

Have you had luck with yucca elata or glauca Barb? The misting is a good idea. I use a glass to water mine and it seems a little rough at times.
You can really tell when the right conditions were met because seeds start sprouting like crazy once they're ready it seems like.

Yucca elata advice

I just planted some yucca elata seeds in medium size pots with a gritty mix of sand and gravel, there's about 1/2 an inch or more sand on the surface. I'm seeing that these have transplant issues. What I want to do is move them into bigger pots in the spring and maybe keep them there for 3 - 5 years...
