Some plants near the palms

This little Echinopsis is the last baby off some I
planted 4 years ago-this one has somehow survived
although easily seeing temps between 0-10F

I had a little A.Americana planted right under the
6' Y.Aloifolia-it sent out a pup before the mother-ship(Aloifolia)
sucked it up-

This is it-not sure how it has survived numerous dips into the single
digits but if I lose my bigger Americana I know where I will plant this one.

Did your claret cup cactus turn colors from the cold? Mine seems a darker color. I was wandering if it was beginning to rot or if that's just what it does in the winter.

It does,it turns a burnt red color and starts to lean over.

Always throws me for a loop although I see it every year.

The truly cold hardy barrels are somehow able shed those unwanted
pounds(of water) and lay down almost all the way over..

I agree, mine do the same thing. I also think it is a good sign the cactus is winter hardy.

That americana is going to get how tall? 9 feet? 10 feet?

Always trust your gut...when you know the potential is there for damaging cold.....

unfortunately this seems to happen every year(it will not happen again next year)forecasted
lows in the 27-28F range were inaccurate as when I looked at the temp at 4am it was 22F


I ran out on brought in the Bizzy,Jacaranda,Medio Picta Alba,potted T.rex,Martianus,Norfolk Island pine and threw
a box and another sheet on the Agave(2nd night),Cereus peruvianus-and the old man.

You can see some of the leaves of the variegated Americana started to melt.
About 7" of rain in Oct/Nov was not a help here.

Hopefully the CP will still look this cool next year-it grew 4' of new column this year
and this was not hardened off....it also cracked from all the rain-not a good combo 22F and 7" rain.

The very edge of the rib was frozen-note to self- leave the blankets on instead of letting the sun unthaw this/any plant!


Notice the discoloration on the edge of the rib-be interesting to see if it can live WITH it.

Tops of the newer leaves on the Americana are discolored and will eventually turn brown.
This one obviously stayed out for the second night of 20F,it did have a canvas tarp over it for that....
glad I pulled the Var Americana

They need to be bone dry for best chance of making it,they weren't.

The old growth on the CP was unaware of any temp change no prob


This is why cold hardy(if they are to be)palms/plants should not be pushed.

Another reason to cease fertilizer by end of June/early July.
Let 'em stick it out on their own in the heat of August and early Sept.
