My Desert

I thought I would share some photos of my newly planted cactus bed here in Z6 Massachusetts. Enjoy! Early Spring construction phase with a newly planted Yucca Thompsoniana and my lanky trachy recovering from the winter. http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a257/conrailfan/IMG_5728_cactusbed.jpg Here it ...

Thanks Barb. I was leaning towards an Agave Parryi. From my readings it appears to be very cold hardy.

Palms and Yuccas

I wanted to share a bunch of pics of my palms, including my new Yucca Thompsoniana and cactus bed in Massachusetts. My small trachy I planted last year that I got from someone in Florida. For protection over the winter I used a string of C7 lights and threw a garbage bin over it. It pulled through ...

Thanks again for the info!

The guy that runs Alligator Alley did email me and said he has shorter ones than pictured but fatter trunks. They charge a $5.00 flat fee for shipping if you order through there website. Otherwise I think he said $17.95 for shipping if ordered by phone.

I plan on planting my Yucca in a raised cactus bed that im going to start building tomorrow. I was reading that you really only need something like pea gravel and builders sand (not the fine stuff) mixed together. Will that be ok for the Yucca?

That's a heck of a deal for $89! Thanks for posting pictures. I'm patiently waiting for the soil temps to warm up here before buying one. Would it be better to pot it the first year before putting it in the ground?

Thanks for the info! I found out Cal-Plants has now changed to "cactusbylin.com". They do not have any Rostratas but they have good size Thompsoniana's for sale. I hear the Thompsoniana is more cold hardy than the Rostrata? Anyone know if there is any truth to that? I might go with one of those ...

Buying a Rostrata

Anyone know any online places where I could purchase a good sized Yucca Rostrata besides Collector Palms and Alligator Alley?

I opened the door today on the big trachy's shelter to air it out and let it get a little sun. Looks ok except for one burnt frond that was touching the side of the shelter all winter. The small trachy did great as well with no damage and two new fronds. I think I'll leave the shelters overhead for ...

Yep. I had the big trachy covered with a insulated box since just after Thanksgiving and the smaller trachy I just threw a trash barrel over. Here's the smaller trachy taken back in the early spring. Pushed out two new fronds over the summer. I'll have to get some pictures of the big one in the ...

How much snow did you guys get over there? We only had maybe half an inch around Springfield. Looks like you may have gotten the same.

Wow thats impressive! Those Washie's are really something. It would be nice if those warm temps we've been having here in MA stick around for the winter! I really jumped the gun and cut down and covered my bananas around Halloween. The big trachy in the ground just got closed up in it's box about ...

Thanks. I'm guessing they are. These were really small white things. I only saw maybe 6 on the palm. Didn't see any webs. I just sprayed the whole plant down in the shower with water and soap. They are gone now whatever they were. I'll check back on it in a few days and see if any more appear.

Looks like Bill is right. Seems the plant has mites!! Atleast that's what it appears to be. There is very small white looking bugs crawling around on the fronds. I've never dealt with these buggers before so im guessing that is what's causing the fronds to brown? What's the method of getting rid of ...

Is this normal?

I brought my potted trachy inside for the winter about two weeks ago. It's really been growing like a weed inside. It has one new frond now and another growing fast behind it. I noticed that the older fronds toward the bottom of the trunk have been slowly turning black. Is it normal for older fronds ...

Windmill Palm - Brown Tips

I purchased this Windmill Palm last month and it's been in the ground about 3 weeks. When I got it the tips were a little brown but now it seems to be getting worse. I planted it in a mixture of cactus mix, perlite, and natural soil. It gets full sun for much of the day. Anyone have any ideas? I'm ...
