Snow Palms Dec. 5th 2009

Figured I'd post the first snow palm pictures of the year. This is the first time any of this stuff has seen snow. Enjoy, They all looked 100% again after some sunshine! I was a little skeptical to let it happen, but glad I did now!

My Neighbors blow up frosty must not have been able to handle snow on my palms, so he died!

Oopps forgot frosty had to edit him in.

Hope you enjoyed my snow palms.

It really looks like Frosty may have knocked back to many frosty ones,if you know what I mean.
Love seeing palms covered in snow!
Kind of reminds me of Cali,with the palms foreground and snow covered mountains in the backdrop-eyecandy!

Palms didn't seem to mind the snow but Frosty did. Go figure!

How much snow did you guys get over there? We only had maybe half an inch around Springfield. Looks like you may have gotten the same.

Ryan,
We got 1-2 inches I guess, it was mixed in with rain so it froze up a little the next morning. Should be all gone tomorrow I'd guess since the sun will be out. Did you have yours covered?

Yep. I had the big trachy covered with a insulated box since just after Thanksgiving and the smaller trachy I just threw a trash barrel over. Here's the smaller trachy taken back in the early spring. Pushed out two new fronds over the summer. I'll have to get some pictures of the big one in the spring. It's actually pretty ugly looking since it was shade grown where I got it. Tall and lanky fronds.

That's a nice palm you have there Ryan. I'm going to get you on the Carl Pool plan next year along with some other things so it pushes out 14 fronds minimum.
How does that sound!

Great pics Bill. We got our first snow here today. About 5cm. About the same as you. They are calling for a big storm here on Wednesday 15-20 mil of rain and a possible 15-20cm of snow... Blah... I don't have winter boots yet!

My parents in Sydenham already have snow...

Here in T.O. they are calling for 5cm in the north of the city and 2cm by the lake. I wonder how it will play out?

Hey Bill.. I don't have a password for the Hardy Palm and Subtropical Board. I guy by the name of Keith posted some pictures from Daytona. I swear they were taken at the Dream Inn where we always stay.. Can you ask him??

No problem Scott. I've spent so much time in the Daytona area over the years. I'd say at least a year of my life no B.S. I can't picture where the Dream Inn is to save my life. Is it in Daytona or Daytona Beach Shores? Anyways I post that for you now.

I just read the board.. That's funny eh? I guessed right. We have stayed there about 4 times. My wife and I have been talking for the past couple of days about heading there in March for a week. Especiall after today. About 6 inches of snow fell last night!

Scott that is funny, it made me look smart on the other board too

I spent Three months at oceans 5 across from Publix a few years ago but like I said I just can't picture the dream inn, so I google earthed it, now I know where it is and remember seeing it. After going through all the events down there I was ready to come home though. I might just see you guys down there in March too, I could show you guys some cool stuff I've found over the years.

I know where the Ocean condos are. They are on the same side as the dream inn but the Dream Inn is heading further south. About a 5 minute walk. There is a 7 11 right across the street. Yeah you did look pretty smart! Mr. Daytona! There is a drive into the beach right beside it. I can reember the name of the drive in. The turtle inn is almost next door and there is a Holiday Inn on the other side. I love Daytona Beach. Watched the Rolex 24hours of Daytona once. I have always wanted to go down for the 500. When we were there 2 years ago we watched the Shuttle take off! Night launch. Really cool!! When are you going in March?

You could always stop by my place when your here for that wedding and bring stuff back that way. Is that realistic or will you get busted by the palm police at the border. The prices might be worth taking a shot!

Scotty- You know you can bring back all the 'houseplants' you want from Florida, right? There is a loop-hole in the laws that says you don't need a phyto, as long as you're not planning to plant them outside.

If you're bringing palms back there won't be much hassle, since who would be dumb enough to plant palms in Esatern Canada?

Can't be done...

Here is a several year old Trachycarpus fortunei that is protected with a burlap wrap each year (Niagara Falls, ON. Zone 6b):

And here is a fortunei that I've been tortuing for several years... Giving it just enough protection to survive, but not enough to grow at all!!!! Bwah ha ha ha!!! (Kingston/Sydenham, ON: zone 4b/5a)

And Scotty- here is a section from the customs website talking about the houseplant thing. Looks to me like ANY palm should count, but you may have a hard time getting a trunked palmetto to meet the requirements!

"Houseplants are defined as plants commonly known and recognized as such, which are grown or intended to be grown indoors. These do not include bonsai plants. If you are importing houseplants from the continental United States as part of your baggage or household effects, you do not need phytosanitary certificates or import permits. For all other plants from the United States, you may require a phytosanitary certificate from the United States Department of Agriculture and an import permit from the CFIA."

Eons ago during a vacation in Hawaii, I found a sprouted cocos in a ditch (during a "touristy" outing) and picked it up.
Had to take it to the UofH, get a phyto ($$$) to bring it back in carry-on luggage.

It wasn't the plant that might affect Canadian crops...it's the soil organisms the CFIA is concerned about.

It was dead within a year, 'coz there was no Palms North forum yet!

Maybe get the "rules and regs" printed off the internet, and take them with you.

Glad that there's now a loophole for people crossing the border with plants.

Maybe we can have the same thing apply for mail orders one day! My order last year still needed a phyto.

Another thing Barb, is that EU countried don't require phyto cert's for shipping plants between them... It would be great if we could get such a thing here in NA, since the import fees etc. are what kills ordering via the USA!

That's because the EU has their act together! Canada's bureaucrats and border constabulary live in a vacuum.
