...and into the tropics! I decided that since I'm young and don't have a stable career or family, I'll work as an English teacher overseas for a while. That way I can see the world while building up my savings. This will be my climate for the near-future: http://worldweather.wmo.int/082/c00309.htm N...

Thanks for the feedback and tips guys! Perhaps I'll get a little succulent garden started this spring. Nice pic, Paul. I'm surprised to see such a healthy agave plant by the beach in Vancouver, BC. I'd think that the higher humidity might be an issue. Andy, it's great to have some people on this boa...

Desert plants in the Pacific Northwest?
When I was driving a few days ago, I noticed an agave and some prickly pear cacti growing in a traffic circle here in Seattle. I didn't think the climate here was suitable for that, but I guess it is! http://i.imgur.com/c50694jl.jpg This was no special microclimate or anything, and the area gets the...

That's an organized operation right there. Is the soil getting moldy in those covered containers or something? What were the species of the successful seedlings? At least you didn't accidentally crush a bunch of already healthy seedlings. I killed a number of my Christmas Palm seedlings when transpl...

Did you get it to work earthworm? Barb is right about using some hydrogen peroxide solution. That stuff is awesome! (I often use it when watering my majesty palm as well). Back in May, when I germinated some phoenix dactylifera seeds, I let the seeds soak in water for a few days after removing as mu...

Nice job! I especially like the Savannah cat too :D Too bad your seedling died. I've been entertaining the idea of getting a Jubaea and planting it outside for a while. (and I know a few are grown outside at the University of Washington) Maybe I should just get a job down south so I can grow hundred...

You bring up a good point about cheese, so I looked into it: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/food-and-nutrition/AN01024 Apparently mold on soft cheese can be bad, but it's fine to cut off mold on harder cheeses (like cheddar) since the mold can't penetrate that far into it. There's mold everywhere ...

Would scraping the mold off really work? What you see of mold is typically just the fruiting body ( fruiting body ). The rest of the fungal structure is deeply embedded throughout the soil. (This is why we don't scrape the mold off of bread and keep it) Could you possibly try washing the soil with h...

Very nice, Scott! Majesty palms are one of my favorite palms when taken care of. That's good that you're keeping your double in a humid environment. I can't do that at the moment, but the humidity usually hovers around 50% at this time of year in the room I keep my 2 palms in. Temperatures get up to...

So far it's doing quite well! It has put out almost 3 new fronds since I got it over 2.5 months ago. (There are 2 plants in the pot) I watch carefully for any signs of an infestation and I water the plant with a little bit of hydrogen peroxide frequently as well. Occasionally, I'll squirt some hydro...
