Exactly what happened to me. Fortunately the spear outgrew the mold and it just [u]broke[/u] off with no spear pull. The way this thing grew this season, I can't wait until next year!

Thanks for the reply and yeah, that whole polar vortex thing really scares me. Not just for the palms but I just can't stand the cold, but that's another story.
Anyway, lets hope it doesn't return with any force this year and if so, i'll at least be prepared.

For anyone interested, the Trachy in the above posts has come through this year with flying colors to say the least. After early spring it looked like it was doomed and as of now it's still growing. Last count is 10 new fronds this year. So of course I'm happy about that and have since planted 2 ...

I'll definitely look into that. I would hate to see this little tree meet it's end from some fungus.

My two Trachy's have been moving very slowly to say the least. So after seeing what you've accomplished, I thought i would give it a try with some CP food. I started my 2 on some CP just a couple days ago. Still waiting for that growth spur with high hopes.

Oh yeah, they stand about 4-5' to the very top but when I do get to posting any pics you'll notice they did take a little beating from when Hurricane Irene came up the coast late summer.
