Time to uncover?

Post by Tarkus »

We've all had the benefit of a mild winter (well a good portion of us anyway) and I'm thinking of checking the 10 day forecast and if I don't see anything in the 20's for lows I'm taking the Trachy's out till next winter. 10 days from now will put us a few days into March which is what i consider spring anyway for a Z7A.
A little background here is that my 2 trachy's have been without COMPLETE protection all winter. They've been wrapped in a cage with insulation and C9 lights but the cage has always been open on top. The ground has also yet to really freeze up.
Anyone think I'm being too ambitious or jumping the gun?

Sorry for the repeat. I just noticed a very similar thread was already started a few weeks back. But at this time of the year a few weeks can make a major difference.

I'm going too uncover everthing but one this weekend. I don't see anything here that's going too hurt my plants. I almost always uncover at the first part of March, but I don't have any palms. :)

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Ambitious, but I dont think you,re jumping the gun. I plan to unbury my fig on the sixth of March... that is when I believe we are in the clear here.

How long have they been in the ground?

They will probably be fine, but if you want to eliminate all uncertainty, wait until 3/21 or soon thereafter.

I did not cover mine at all this year, but they have been in the ground for 4 years now. They look fine, but I am going to wait to uncover the Butia, Med, and Saw Palmettos.

I usually look to uncover(or at least begin chipping them out(-;) by March 1.

If it is possible to leave something over the top to keep water off that would be best.

After reading these replies I think it may be wise to wait just a bit longer. I know we're supposed to have some nice warm days in the next couple (near 70F) but they have only been in the ground since early last August. I was just hoping to get them some real sunlight soon but better to be safe than sorry.
I also do have a means to fully cover them and have done so during a couple rain events when it was fairly cold but for the vast majority of the time it's been open.
Thanks to everyone for your input. Much appreciated.
