great ted talk. I am good with the 6-8 Areca Palms, but if I put the other plants in my house I will have less room for my palm trees. not good. my studies indicate that overwintering any form of palm in your house is good for your attitude and well being. Of course I have no scientific proof with m...

what about those palm wraps?
anybody care to discuss their experience with wrapping larger palm trees during winter. I think last year a number of people experimented with wrapping your trees like a burrito. How did everything turn out and what will you do differently this year? I have a trachy fortunei that's 10 foot tall (wit...

that's a fine looking tree. nice growing job. don't have an answer on the grub thing, although, I use spectracide granular bug killer (grub killer) on my yard a couple of times each summer and it surely gets on and near my in ground palm roots and have never had a problem. just don't over treat and ...

Are you serious? you cant grow palm in Kansas. what are you .... crazy? I am north of you about 2 hours and I use an insulated box and a thermocube (I use the 10/20) and 2 outdoor lights with two 60 watt bulbs for winter time. I have never watered my outdoor palm trees in winter. My palm trees are c...

Kent, Nope, solar pool covers seem only to be available in blue. How's your stuff wrapped up for winter? Barb Wrapped my outdoor palmtrees last weekend (the 16th of Nov). I'd show them to you but they are wrapped in camouflage tarps and you wouldn't be able to see them anyway. I'll get a pic ...

you are right Scott from Omaha, the livistonia chinensis is a tough palm. good luck with yours. I just thought it would look better in a container and I'll pot plant it each summer in my front flower bed. didn't know how many years it could take getting its rear kicked in winter and then come back s...

update pics
a couple of pictures of the Trachy Fortuneis and livistonia chinenesis planted on the north side of my house in June/July 2009. these never get any sun. In wintertime I build a very simple palm hut and just add leaves , no heat provided. The first picture on this thread shows them in Oct 2010. Here ...

my protected stuff looks pretty boring right now. My stuff at home has been covered since about the middle of December. I also have a few in ground palms at our lake house, which is about 2.5 hours south, a little safer zone 6. I am heading down there early next week to cover those palms for the win...

I'll post a pic soon. Its pretty good size but its 4 palms growing in one pot. Its very heavy. This summer , rather than move it up to the next size container (which I would be unable to lift) I decided I would trim roots on the palm and put it back in the same container. True Story here, I cut the ...

that trunk is getting fat so he/she must eating the soil. maybe you should try some low calorie soil, made with vegetable compost. my cidp does the same thing. I think they grow a ton of feeder roots just on top of the soil. I keep covering mine up but they just grow through each year. thats a good ...

John - yes , just using leaf mulch in a protected enclosure. I have this thread which shows how I protect my palms.

update on T Fortuneis
I am getting ready to protect my outdoor inground palms in the next few weeks. Thought I would show you some amazing growth on several little fortuneis I planted on the north side of my house in 2009 (probably during summer months but not absolutely certain when they went in ground). I had a bunch o...

this is stating the obvious, but when I collect seeds, I look up at the tree and see if there are any seeds hanging, if not, I move on to another tree. If there are seeds hanging I then focus my attention on the looking around the base of the tree for seeds and seedlings. take several small baggies ...
