John, you have a great micro-climate. The airport registered -8C/18F here Saturday night and -9C/16F last night. Of course my yard might not have been that bad. My yard thermometer said only -4C/25F the one night. Perhaps I need to go digital. I'd love to have a remote sensor in one of my palm areas ...

Dr. Francko wrote that Sabals fry under heavy wet leaf mulch, mine sure did, but the Trachies seem to be okay and mine were. Still I think I may mix leaves and straw together or leaves and woodchips to get a bit of loft to the mix (and avoid collapse). The air pockets can only help with insulation I ...

Barb, I keep throwing a garbage can over it but that won't be enough protection I'm sure. I may get wood mulch to stuff into the garbage can as well and maybe that will help. I planted it so late that I can't expect much. I'll keep the seedlings mulched with leaves. I put a bottomless pot over the ...

Excellent, I'll get the leaves flying toward that bed when I rake today. :) I'm still not sure if I should put more elaborate protection over my Trachy seedlings or not. I'm tempted to just only do the leaf mulch again but maybe I'll try something different on one of the clumps. And maybe even a bit ...

Time yet for winter protecton?
Generally when should I add winter protection for my Trachycarpus fortunei palms? Before the nights hit freezing?
Supposedly we'll drop to -5C/23F later this week.
Is the answer 'yesterday'?

Thanks. I was wondering about leaving it there but I'll have to research more into the wall o water, etc. I'd prefer to avoid heating but will have to figure out something here soon. Maybe I could double rose cone it along with mulch. And the water is for the freezing and thawing thing? I'll have to ...

Thanks, John. The trachies look good and some have begun to fan. There are so many of them they should really be separated. I was thinking about lifting them but will follow Paul's advice and leave them till next spring. Another winter may prove which are the hardiest ones for me... under leaves of ...

Bill, no pictures yet. I bought two one gallons and one so called three gallon but it looks more like a two gallon pot to me. I gave one of the smaller gallons to a friend in Vancouver for his balcony. The one gallon plant has much longer petioles than the three gallon and the three gallon is maybe ...

Re: palms and yuccas calgary, alberta, canada
"It's great to see Calgary landscapers using hardier palms as annuals. It beats the same old fragile zone 10+ plants they traditionally use."
Awesome. A great start, isn't it?

It's very frustrating. By the way today I saw a beautful rostrata with a good five feet of trunk at Cedar Rim Nursery in Langley. Very nice. They had an amazing Yucca aloifolia variegated that I wondered about surviving in Penticton. I saw many small rostratas at Southlands in Vancouver but they ...

Thanks everyone. I was on the coast, Vancouver, for the last few days for a seminar, and did get to a few places. Southlands had some Trachies and a few Washingtonia robustas, Cedar Rim had Trachies and also Chamaerops and some 10 g Jubaea for $500, Art's Nursery in Surrey had a few Trachies.... I ...

Yes, I've wondered about Bulgaria, Romania, etc but many seem to still have a lot more GDDs as they are further south perhaps. I'll have to check out Shoshone and I've wondered about Twin Falls, Idaho too. Hmmmm. Interesting anyway. PS I saw some very nice Yucca recurvifolias at Cedar Rim Nursery in ...

The CNLA, lists five growers of Needle palm on the plant finder in BC. I'm really hoping they are talking about Rhapidophyllum and not just Yucca filamentosa . I've never noticed this on the site before. Great site by the way but mainly lists wholesale growers. http://www.canadanursery.com/Page.asp ...

Penticton or Okanagan type climates
Okay, you climate/weather buffs where is a city similar to mine that grows palms (and/or trunking yuccas)? Gallup,NM is similar but the GDDs are not the same (among other things) and, of course, Oroville, WA is similar. Sante Fe is similar but... I have a list of places with similar averages and ...
