Today I would say Sarasota/Siesta Key Florida at least for 5-6 months of the year. The gulf waters are warm and the location is far enough south to grow Coconut Palms.

I have the same concern about balancing the insulation and light requirement. I'm probably wasting energy by letting out too much heat at night however the opposite occurs during the day.

BTW, your retlatives are most likely a nice calm

20 minute drive to the store with no highways driving 60km/hr. My 20 minutes involves highways and what some would call "excessive speed"

but only if traffic permitts...

Yes I did, as it's only takes me about 20 minute drive there from my house.

The only issue I have with the 90 watt light bulb is the fact that it is not very common. I would have to sub it with a 100 watt.
Alternately I could add a string of C9 light bulbs and only lighting about 10 of them around the plants.

Thoughts?

I picked up a T-3 at Hedonics for $20.00 (thanks Paul for the info). I hooked up a 60 watt light bulb :sign7: and it seems to keep my mini palm hit from going below 30F. Coldest outside temp so far has been -12.6.6C/9.3F Does anyone know if there is a more efficient way of heating an area roughly 5 ...

I'm sure that the palms will recover. They are fast growing palms. I just picked up my first Queen palm the other week. I really like the way they look. Reminds me of Florida.

I'm pretty sure your mag will recover. In the past mine (DD Blanchard) fully defoliated and then came back nicely. This is the first year that I didn't wrap them and they did much better with no defoliation. I'm hoping they will flower this year. What variety do you have?

All mulch is town compost 22+ yards worth, limed but makes plants crazy. Sounds kinda like me!!!!

It was a bit of shocker when I saw the aftermath. We usually don't expect to see that type of damage coming from the Vancouver area. I'm sure it will bounce back as good as ever by the end of the summer.

A nursery very close to my home has a bottle palm about 5ft tall listed at $269.99 however it now marked down 70% off. Not knowing much about these palms I think it's a good price but I'm unsure how it will do in the house. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I see many people in my area wrapping up not so tender evergreens and Japanese Maples. To spend an hour protecting a palm while it gives your months of beauty in the spring-fall is not unreasonable.
