How many can I send you? 8)

With less than "optimum" conditions here in Kansas I'll probably be able to keep these for 2-3 yrs. With most of my stuff in containers they will be retiring to warmer climates long before I do

Kansas,
Will let you know, Haven't been getting much sleep lately as cold as it has been, ( Having to take warm water out to the fish & firing up additional heat) Hopefully your outside stuff is doing OK?

Seeds

Post by Knnn » Sun Jan 28, 2007 6:04 am

These were from Ortanique http://ortanique.com

At least half were already germinated upon arrival and the rest within a week.
It's nice therapy to be able to watch something grow this fast during the Winter 8)

With our lows in the teens the next few night, springtime seems like a long way away my Kansas friends. If we can get through to mid february our temps should start to moderate a bit. I had to use the spot lights in my palm hut last night and kept the temp over 20F. Did not want to take any chances since my stuff out there looks good. I also have a T Fortunei on the southside of my house covered in just leaves, I uncoverd it this morning to look at it and its still green. This seedling has taken temps near 0F and it appears OK. I don't know how warm the leaf mulch keeps the plant , but it appears OK. I should also point out that with any snow/ice/rain event I have covered the palnt with a 15 gallon plastic white trash can that keeps the elements off.

oppalm,
Do you have a outside thermometer inside your hut or down in with your leaves?
I'm thinking about going to walmart and buy me a couple cheap outside thermometers and stick inside next to my plam
and bananas,so I can monoter the temps on those cold nights.

Received these the last week in October, Half were already germinated and the others within a few days. The only caution with these is not to let them dry out too much, other than that it's fairly routine culture to keep them happy 8)

Common Names

Post by Knnn » Sun Feb 11, 2007 12:30 pm

I have just heard these referred as Pigafetta's ~ Some of the local names do translate to "Wanga Palm" etc.

Ortanique seems to have a good supply of seed , RPS also has these listed.

tropicman - was just reading through this post again and saw you asked me a question in Jan 07 about an outside thermometer. I do have a wireless thermometer in my palm hut and the base units inside the house. It shows me the temp inside the hut and also keeps a record of the minimum and maximum for a 24 hour period. I picked two of these thermometers up at the ACE Hardware store on their closeout table. Paid $5 for each. They are nice to have.

Steady growing, but not too fast.

New spear opening, and a bit more spines.

Mine got spider mites bad,and had to cut several leaves off,but I believe it's starting to come back, abit ever so slow!!!!
I gave her a shot of Bayer Tree and Shrub, and she's back on the road to recovery!
Couple of the Mexican cycads have added a new leaf as well!!!

Thanks Don! Glad to hear yours is recovering. Have heard good things about the Bayer Tree & Shrub mix, how is that working for you?
I let the spiders take over in the GH this season, they did a great job, even knocked the fungus gnats down. The only problem is, I don't really mind the smaller spiders, but the bigger spiders move in to eat them, and then the tarantula looking things start showing up. Think I am going to try Praying mantises & lady beetles next year. :D

Thanks for the info! It seems a bit more expensive than the other stuff, but if it works, then well worth it.

Remember that small banana plant you sent me home with last Spring?
Here it is on it's way into the cellar for Winter storage, these do start to get heavy as they get bigger...lol
( for reference, that cart is 4' long )

Here is a photo of it back in March,

This is the first year that I've had any success with these, I followed Don's and Barrie's advice regarding amendments, planting, etc with good results.

(This is the first year for overwintering these too, so when I see Don post that he is digging his up , I dig mine up too
