Potted Sago / with pups

Just noticed this one is starting to grow some pups at it's base.

knnn, Will you cut the pups off to start new ones...or leave them on? Do pups grow into baby sagos while on the mother plant, or only once they've been removed?

My old neglected one (after repotting, and looking more closely) showed 5 or 6 pups. Barb

Most of what I've read suggest waiting until the pups are at least " baseball" size before removing.
By then they should have developed some independent roots, both of ours may have a few more years to go......
Yours is nice and healthy to have started some at it's size

Knnn, the colour of yours indicates it's really healthy.

Mine was, you'll recall, really neglected. I figured it just stopped growing, even though I watered it lots in summer and fertilized it a little. I think that's why it's putting out those 5 or 6 pups (it thinks it's going to die...) Sometimes really healthy plants don't bloom/set seed until something bad happens, like neglect. So I'm halfway there.

After reading all these postings, I realize I can zap it pretty hard with fertilizer, and often too (versus the twice a summer I was doing).

Yours looks fine, Cycads keep to their own schedule, sometimes they will sit for several years with no new growth.............

Now would be a good time to add some high nitrogen fertilizer to yours to help wake it up, also, if you can find a fertilizer with minor elements.

A lot of Sagos get underwatered during the Summer months which slows down growth, If it is warm out you can water at least once or twice a week.

As long as the the caudex is still solid, it is OK ,and will probably take off this Summer with some attention!

Thanks for that link...I see it's 24-7-8 with minors. I'll take a look around.
Read somewhere here (I think) that the caudex should always be damp? Or did I get that wrong?
It is solid, so that's a good sign from your post.
I will pay special attention to it this year for sure.
We just need some warmth now...next week's forecast is colder again.

During the cooler months try and keep the caudex dry, ( pull back the mulch,etc)

Should be seeing new fronds in another month
(One of my Zamias has already started)
