Post by sidpook » Thu Aug 25, 2011 6:34 am

Hey everyone....
Hurricanes....Record Rainfall for August so far...Earthquakes.....Busy month and week here! How is everyone else faring with the drought in the south and /or the record rainfalls here in the northeast? We got about 11 inches of rain so far for August and the hurricane is foreacast to bring more this weekend to NJ. And how about that 5.9 mag quake?? Anyone else feel it?
Happy summer....waning....
Mike

Can you imagine a direct hit on N.Y. and Mass?
That would really be amazing!
Esp if it has no interaction with land first.

Remember what N.O. looked like with so many
windows blown out of skyscrapers!

I doubt it would make a difference to these assholes
but if N.Y./D.C. are severely damaged maybe the douche bags
in D.C. will finally start thinking about taking care of this country first!

Michael,
I hope your Cape May place is battened down...

It was stunning how huge an area of population felt that EQ...something about there being "no faults" along which to dissipate the shaking.
Bet there are some faults there now :|

Be careful as that thing approaches!
Yup, please take some photos from a safe spot.

Yeah, Thanks Barb. We headed back here to Audubon. Cape May is supposed to get a direct hit with 100mph winds and major surge. Not looking forward to going back down to check things out afterward. I'll take pics from the relative safety of Audubon......Of course we will be making "Hurricanes" this weekend to drink in the hot tub! Woohoo!

It's actually gonna clip N. Carolina and hit dead on in Cape MAy running up the Jersey coast NY then off to New England. The Jersey coast is all small low-lying barrier islands...Yikes!! We are 2 miles inland, but that's not much help with wind!

What a week there.
I think a 5.8 is the strongest I remember from living in Oregon. Out there, all bookcases, tall furniture, TVs, etc. are anchored to a stud up in the wall so they don't fall over in quakes. I don't do that here in OK, but I guess we all should, whereever we live.

Irene--wow. We are praying for you. I'm drinking a hurricane in your honor right now.
But, I have to suggest a modicum of sobriety for you this weekend to ensure you have your wits about to deal with whatever comes your way.

I forgot about your coastal house. Sorry in advance.

Sorry to be morbid, but can you take photos for your Flickr account? Your storm photo from last week (http://www.flickr.com/photos/michaeltra ... 58284/?v=1) is amazing enough.

Wear a hat in the hot tub!

And then run for the safety of the house.

Beautiful day here today, hot and humid. Lazing in the pool. Went for a jog...just waiting for the sh$%T to hit the fan tomorrow night. They still havent cancelled our Phillies game for tomorrow night @ 7pm. I'm taking my nephew. Gotta say though, I am most worried about my Musas...They're so tall and beautiful now: sure they're gonna get shredded!!! :(

Maybe before and after pics?
The strongest winds my bananas have seen this month is 66 MPH (100 kmh). Siam ruby was shredded but stood. Ensete was fine, and the fiber bananas were also pretty good.
Of course yours may see at lot worse and for much longer

Stay sober and alert.
I really cannot imagine. We get intense storms here, but they pass quickly. Irene is so huge it will seemingly last forever.
The only hurricane I experienced was Agnes, in 1972. I was visiting family on Staten Island NYC. Bad flooding. No power. Scary. Irene is stronger.

Ive only been in the "remnants" of Hurricanes. The backside of Katrina, when it went over southern ontario, and there was one the next year that went right over top of us.

As crazy as it sounds, id love to experience a massive hurricane

Haha,,,I literally just posted that to my facebook page 20 mins ago. Great minds...I also posted the Los Lobos Video Shakin Shakin Shakes when we had the earthquake on Tuesday...Hmmm, I guess I'll need to think of a video to post when we have the locust pestilence next week?????

It is starting to rain here finally getting the northernmost bands coming through. We shall see how this plays out. I have secured everything I could in my gardens and have a boatload of ice, fresh water , food and battery operated electronics. I was even able to get my daily jog in ...I also tied my 8 foot tall red Cannas to the gazebo wrought iron...I would hate to lose them to the winds, they are amzing this year! Chat soon....I hope! Hi Mike,

I felt the quake at my office in East Greenwich, RI. The building was shaking but no damage. Strange that we felt it so strong and we are so far away from Virginia.

How's the hurricane damage? The heavy rains just ended 15 min ago here. No big damage here....a few branches down. Banana leaves look OK!

Woke up a few minutes ago from my coccoon. We were extremely lucky, the center f the storm hit 30 miles off the coast of cape may rather than a direct hit as first projected. Up here inland at home, just about 8 inches of rain (on top of the 12 so far this month) and lotsa leaves and branches down, did lose one huge banana leaf, others looking good. Going for a jog: far away from large trees. :)

OK, so our prayers worked
Have a good jog, take & upload some photos, and then have a post-hurricane party to use all that beer and wine you stock-piled.
