Yucca growth "stuck"?

Post by lucky1 » Thu Jun 03, 2010 2:00 pm

Weird, never saw the new leaf stuck in a dead sheath.

Image

Others look like leaves are weak this year.

And...ta da....dare I hope for this Y.rostrata x to make it after all?

Looks like it is struggling to put out. I cut a few of the smaller plants from my larger yuccas and they did that for a week or two. Then i opened it up manually and let it get some sun and it has taken off. Can you do try to unfold it and see if there is anything in it??

Good Luck Barb,

Good idea!
The Y. filamentosa sheath, on peeling back, was really moldy but new leaves appear unaffected.

Unwrapped 11 (!!!) leaves on Y. rostrata x
I now hope it's recovering (versus dying slowly).

What's your success rate doing that, Mike?
I tried it this year, and about 50% survived.
But the mother plants look better than before, likely benefiting from less root competition.

Thanks for the idea.

cool looking Y. rostrata........

Nice looking, wide leaved form of Yucca rostrata. Do you have a photo of it prior to the damage? Your form appears to have very wide leaves......perhaps the rostrata x rigida form? How cold did you get?

Here's the "before", Tim:

Image

Can't find my temp record pages right now, but it was bloody cold mid-December.
Darn Canadian winters!

Got it Aug. 08, labelled "Blue Beaked Yucca rostrata".
But others agree with you that it's mislabelled.
Glad it is (was) two-headed, 12.4 US gallon size.

Maybe not absolute cold but the suddenness of it.

Cold hardy plants need tome to harden off :?

thanks for posting that photo of your 'rostrata'. That's not a typical rostrata. Those leaves are really wide, appear more rigid, and have a 'U' shape to them. I'd say it's closer to a Y. rigida than a Y. rostrata. Temperature data can help us ID it as well since rigida is a solid USDA 8 plant where rostrata is a solid USDA 7 plant. In dryer climates both can withstand colder USDA climate zones. Rigida died on me my first winter and I kept winter moisture off of it. I've had good success with rostrata with and without winter moisture protection (it's seen a low of -8F so far with daytime highs of 10F or so). Try a 'normal' rostrata and it may not burn out on you!

appear more rigid
you're right...the yucca would survive a head-on with a 3/4 ton Ford.

-8F = -22C, yup that sounds fairly close to our lows last winter.

I did keep moisture off it, but the lack of "sunshine" from the total cover could have hurt it too.

On a brighter note, I bought 6 nice Y.rostrata "sapphire skies", in 2008 from Plant Delights Nursery in the Carolinas

A few remain in this pot, others are planted out.

Try a 'normal' rostrata
.
Does sapphire skies qualify? Thks.
