musa basjoo not all that green...help

Hey all, my several musas are not all that green...the leaves are a light olive colour, also they are growing quit slow...any suggesitons?

A nitrogen rich fertilizer, organic compost and regular watering will help. Warm weather is also a requirement but Musa basjoo has less of a heat requirement than most other banana types.

For nutrients other than NPK, you should at least use Iron, Calcium and Magnesium. Your fertilizer should be high in Potassium (K).

I use an acid loving plant water soluble fertilizer weekly. These are typically 30% nitrogen and I water daily. High heat helps as do long days. My bananas have been adding one full leaf every two days and are a deep green color.

That's amazing! 15 new leaves a month! Thats 60 leaves over a 4 month time frame.

Arctic use a product called Quick Green with Iron by Garden PRO 5-0-0 +7.2 fe. This works great for all my plants.And then use some of the other fertilizers suggested after everything greens up for you.

Mines not all that green either, but what can I say when it's free...

I agree, lots of fertilizer with high N. I would also add some epsom salt.

Thanks Dean. I have no experience with this banana. Ned Rahn gave it to me yesterday when I was down at his place. He knows I collect variegated plants. I'm going to keep this in a pot & see if I can get it to produce.

Good luck I know they can be finicky. Becareful with strong sunlight at first. Maybe a semi-shade position might be good for it. There a pricey banana so you got lucky to get one free.

So my musas are looking much better, not growing in hight but pushing new leaves all the time.....each parent plant has about 5-10 babies EACH....Im a daddy!!!

Grats on your AeAe laaz. I use miracle grow sphagnum and and a little perilite for my ae ae I water it everyday it should grow fast for you. I found they hate direct sun and love to be watered 2 times a day in summer.

Is it true variegated bananas don't like the sun?

Here's my musa basjoo mid-Feb. barely gettin through winter in the cold building.
Looks like it'd make fine tobacco...
