Yucca filamentosa x rostrata

Post by TimMAz6 » Tue Jun 05, 2012 2:51 pm

Here's a recent photo of a Yucca filamentosa x rostrata hybrid (seed from Benny of Denmark). Great.....I mean great hybrid. It looks good year round.

Tim that's a beauty.
Certainly seems to have more rostrata genes than filamentosa.

Color is also closer to Y. rostrata. Will it form trunk in future?

That is a fantastic plant! I sound like a broken record, but the F2 from that cross will be very interesting!

I'm not sure if this hybrid will form a trunk....I hope so. It grows so well here it's amazing.....F2's will be nice to try too!

Hi Paul

I have 6 seed grown filatas. #3 formed a trunk after its first bloom but the trunk died after its second bloom. #5 bloomed last season for the first time and is now forming a trunk with no other suckers. All other filatas are not trunk forming. Only time will tell if #5 will continue to trunk after its next bloom. Perhaps the reverse hybrid (elata x filamentosa) will produce trunkers?

Nice when a hybrid gives you the best traits of both.
Really lovely!

I'm disappointed with Yucca filametosa x elata hybrids. I have 6 different plants and only 1 appears to be trunk forming. Hopefully it will continue to trunk after it's second bloom.

Obviously filamentosa is the boss.
It'll be good to watch the one that is trunking.

Barb, hybrid genes are funny.........those filatas have narrow-ish leaves like elata, roots like elata, blooms like elata but don't trunk like filamentosa!

Aaron, those filata seeds are F2 so perhaps they will turn out different??

F2 means a second generation hybrid......filata #5 x filata #5. Yes you have #5 but it was crossed with #5 or with big mama.

Hello Tim,

This clone looks great, it seem to like to grow in your climate. It will be very interesting to see, if any of the rostrata hybrids will grow a trunk. I do not have any rostrata hybrids in this size, not even close to yours in size.

I look forward to see more photos of "my babies".

Hi Benny,

it will be interesting to see if it trunks.........and how much trunk prior to the first bloom. My taller rostrata has never bloomed and I've had it since 2002.

Here's a photo of a real Y. rostrata and the Y. filamentosa x rostrata for comparison.

Hello,

Thanks for showing the comparison photo, they look great together. I have checked my files, and the cross you got seed of was BMJ 2092 Yucca filamentosa x rostrata (pollen from Ruud Wouterson in The netherlands. My seedlings were killed the first winter, so I do not have any of this cross my self. I have other crosses with the same pollen donor, and they all have inherited the strong blue color on the leaves.

Best wishes

Benny

First time I see your frontyard. Lot of space for new plantings. What kind of Yucca is in your rearview mirror?

wow, nice eyes seeing the Yucca in the car's mirror.

It's a Y. recurvifolia form sent to me from Jim Kelly of New Jersey back in 2003.
