Yuccas... next generation and more

Post by andym » Sun Aug 11, 2013 2:16 pm

I keep showing you all some large Yuccas but I have some smaller ones too
Image
The front two Yucca Rigida and the curiously coloured Thompsonia need urgent repotting. Very pleased to get hold of Yucca Rostrata sapphire skies which is the plant with a price tag still on.

Image
What a difference a pot size makes to growth... both last years seed grown Yucca Schotti. I've also planted one in the ground.

Image
Good growth on the beautiful Blue Yucca Pallida. The old leaves are sea green and thin.

Image
Lots of problems from last Winter with Yucca Aloifolia. The standard quite literally hung on to its head by the skin of its teeth but has grown back well. Lost the head on the Marginata but it has come back with four new heads. A very marginal Yucca for my wet Winters.

Image
Super growth on that gorgeous blue Yucca Rigida. The large Butia Eriospatha stricta is beginning to grow again after suffering -18C at the Tropical Centre in 2011/12 Winter. The Green Yucca Rostrata behind the Rigida is absolutely knackered. Flowered last Summer and was open to the elements last Winter. No sign of any new growth. It'll come out and be repotted.
Oops nearly forgot Tims hybrids

Mostly successful but a few never germinated :D

Very nice seedlings! The Tim's hybride growing in the soil is 20 times bigger than the little guys growing in the pots... What's a shame to me!

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Andy, my thompsonianas get red/purple too especially when cold or dry stressed.
You are so right about aloifolia. Very susceptible to cold wet conditions. It looks like you are fine on the variegata now. Wow, 4 heads!
Wow, I love that blue rigida and the pallida is looking great too. Good thing the Butia e. is growing back.

Thanks for your comments :D
Igor.. I have since potted up tim's hybrids. I'll see how they get on but planting straight into the ground is a no no here. The slugs and snails would soon devour them. My wooded Aloe Striatula still gets shredded by these beasts
Adam.... thanks for your comments... crazy to think that Variegated Aloifolia was unmarked as a seedling in December '10 but it was mainly dry cold typical Continental.
The last of my big Yuccas was planted today... Yucca Rostrata and a small Dasylirion Glaucophylum

Hi Andy,

great update. I'm shocked that those western Yuccas will grow in your climate since they require so much sun.

You have some great specimen plants......that last rostrata is just massive!

Is that a Loquat growing next to the rostrata? How cool is that. 8)

Your seedlings look great. It's interesting to see Y. filata #4 'Big Mama' with the smallest, narrowest leaves. That's really interesting since it's one of the most massive Yuccas in the garden when in 'full glory'. I may have to start some of the #4 seed myself to see what they grow into.

Yucca filata #4 'Big Mama'. You can see a Y. pallida, Y. recurvifolia and Ensete in the background for scale.

You have a good observation that Yuccas love root growth to show top growth. I try to get my seedlings into the ground after a few months since they grow so fast this way. I tend to kill Yuccas in containers since they get weak fast when in small containers. I'd plant a few out now........they are full hardy against cold but they could use some moisture protection. If you need more seed let me know.

Beautiful collection...

That variegated Aloifolia is going to be even more beautiful with more growth points...

I actually moved the 6'+ green Aloifolias out as they were to big to cover(easily)
and moved the variegated Aloifolia in their place-they turn a lovely reddish color as well
in spring and fall while the sun is still strong and night temps start to get cold...variegated
Aloifolia is one of the most beautiful and under planted Yucca IMO

Hi Tim.... regarding the seeds... well I had a problem after my cat started a ruckass with the next door neighbours cat. Some of the labels were knocked out of their pots. I put them back in but maybe not in the right order. Hopefully when they get bigger you can help with id's. Most are correct just a few got turfed out.
Jim... I was gutted when I lost that head on the variegated Aloifolia. The trunk is still relatively small so not sure whether the plant will look right with all those extra heads... we'll see :)
