HELP!!!!!! My Basjoo just fell apart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by canadianplant » Tue May 17, 2011 9:11 am

I put my Musa basjoo outside in the pot to harden it off. Its in the shade, and not exposed to wind. I went back outside about a half hour later, and the thing ( ironicaly) peeled apart like a banana. Im not over watering it, its never dried out and water it just when the leaves start to droop a bit.

Taking it out a pot, washing the roots, applying some fungicides, drying it for a while and planting into new sterile soil. Watering moderately and keeping in a warm place with ventilation. I think it's good enough.

You may need to cut everything off but the main/middle part
and prop it/tie it up-until the sun gets it strengthened up again.

Unless you can do this and leave the leaves on-that would be even better.

So fungus/rot caused that?
But if it was dry all winter, wouldn't that prevent rot? :|

Hope it recovers for you.

Im a bit lost as to whats going on....

IT got a minimum of 5 or 6 hours of sunlight ( south) all winter long. The stem was thick and strong, and it was pushing new growth all winter, and it finished putting a leaf out 3 days ago ( the last one remaining), and is even growing a new one. IT put it on the ground, went in the house, came back, and it literaly lookes like its been peeled. THe base is nice and solid, and so is the psudostem ( the pencilstem more like it now  )

Im going to give it a day or 2, to see if its still going to push out the new leaf, dispite the thing literaly bending to the ground. If it does nothing, then I think im going to give it a haircut ( the absolute LAST thing i want to do, dispite the fact I know they regrow back, and quite fast)

If it WAS rot, id assume to smell something, and the stem would go to mush ( which hasnt happened)...

Im finally laughing at the irony of a banana plant peeling itself.... imagine what people would pay if the fruit did that??? LOL

Probably just weak winter growth-if the core lives
it will grow out of it in full(outdoor)sunshine.

Well, after 4 tries at proping it back up, I gave up. IT kept bending, and bending which im assuming isnt good for it, and even if it did regrow, it would have a unhealthy kink in its growth ( im assuming). So, after following some tips ( thanks guys), I decided to cut it down, just below the kink. Not what I was hoping to do, but now itll grow straight, and hopefuly that wont happen again.

IT was definetly NOT rotten. Mabey the outer leaves near the bottom where they creased, but other then that, the stem is healthy ( great news ! )

Hmmmm...Sad. I had some do the same thing to me in the ground in April and March. I just ct them all the way down about 4 inches to the ground and they are finally reemerging slowly. Hope it works out for you!
