Steve Sillet and I were classmates in "plant physiology" as college juniors. He is still above me (well, I'm taller). His senior project dealt with epiphytes in douglas fir trees and he had to learn tree climbing for that.
Going back even further in time, as a boy in Oregon my parents had a Sequoia in the front yard. The lower branches were still down to the ground so it was a phenomenal climbing tree for a kid.
