Echeveria ready to bloom
These get nicer each year, despite being in blazing sun until about 2pm

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Hi Aaron,
They've been planted out since around end of April.
Will re-pot them in September to go back into the barely-heated building.
One thing I found interesting last year:
when I set them out into sun, the sun was already strong and many of the leaf tips went mushy from
sunburn. People suggested "they're fried" and that they would not recover.
I didn't cut off the sunburned areas, just left them, and within a month they recovered fully.
This year was different...no sun in April, so no sunburn.

Allen,
Dandelions are starting up (GRRRRR!)...hate 'em.
Everything else will be a lot later this year.
It's also snowing southeast of us in the Kootenays, so you're not alone.

Are those hardy? They are so beautiful
I bought some rolled leaf green ones that are supposed to be hardy in a zone 5, but only time will tell.

Unfortunately, they're not hardy, Aaron.
I always dig them up before the first frost and bring them into a cool building for the entire winter, keeping them dry.
Maybe too dry (hence the bloom)
Someone suggested that Echeveria includes Hens-and-Chicks plants, which I do have growing outdoors.
They are bulletproof but I wouldn't try any of these others outdoors for winter.

To bad, those would be awesome in the garden(year-round). Of course it still is
I will try and post some pics of the one I have, not your typical hen and chicks. It is supossed to be hardy in a zone 5, but it came from a nursery in Las Vegas, so how would they know.

Yes I'd like to see a pic of it, Aaron.
I'll try to find the link in which many are pictured, with their latin names.
It was an excellent site.

Aaron,
that's cool!
doesn't seem to resemble any pictured on the Echeveria link I provided.
But it could well belong to the family, despite the "hollow tube" stems, which my other Echeveria don't seem to have.
Now I'm curious what yours is.
Were the tip ends fried from winter?
deer? rabbits?
BTW, other than "hens and chicks" none of mine are hardy, but it's really easy to plant them out in spring.
No special care (treat like cactus). Then in fall pot them up into an unglazed clay pot. Easy. Keep dry but sunny.

Barb,
The ends are fried from cold. It has not gone through a winter here yet. Just a hard freeze from this spring. They said it is good to zone 5, but we will see.

Aaron,
I hope the "ends" recover, as I'd guess rot could occur if water gets in there.

Barb,
I don't think they are very deep, it is just the tips that are hollow.

Instead of hen's 'n chicks, maybe it's the roosters, with all that stuff sticking up
