Covering up the robusta

Post by Knnn » Sun Oct 19, 2008 12:06 pm

This one is going on it's 3rd winter in ground,
(should be a bit bigger, it's had some bad luck the last couple years, but keeps chugging along :D

Saved the building from last year, it's a wood frame with two layers of Poly and a window in the front for ventilation.

It really doesn't take much to heat, I use a 750W heater just to keep up when temps get down to around 0F

Since I'm paying to heat that space, going to take advantage of every square inch...............

Besides, the dining room was getting full

Steve now I know why you never invite me over for dinner - there is no place to sit in the dining room.

We are having the family Christmas at our house this year and my wife has already layed down the rules about plants in the house for winter and expecially nothing in the dining room. It seems a bit early to me to be worrying about Christmas but my wife is serious. My basement greenhouse just got bigger and more crowded. sidebar - I was in KMart last weekend and they have their Christmas displays and lights up already. Bought a nice end of season lime tree and PygmyDatePalm for $7.50 total (for both).

Kent,
Maybe this year I'll just hang some Christmas lights up on the banana plant.............lol

Not a bad deal on the Lime & Pygmy, not too many bargains around here.
Found this wall fountain marked down at Lowes to $15.00, figured it might be a good spot to put some orchids, etc.

BTW ~ Everything you sent is doing well! The Areca vestiaria is going to be a nice one 8)

ditto on your stuff. everything looks great. The areca vestiaria have great color for being young palm trees. I hope they stay colorful.

The water feature is a great idea. Good luck.

Started hauling stuff into the garage last night and setting up the green room in the basement. Things have really gotten much bigger just over summer.

That Robusta sure sprang back after what it went through when someone unplugged the heater last winter.
It's going to want a taller winter house soon.

Nice deal on a great fountain.
It'll provide great humidity in the GH.
I looked at HD fountains (hoping for a bargoooon).
They were $129.00 all the way to $299.00.

Kent, now that's funny!
Your wife
layed down the rules about plants in the house for winter
and off you go to KMart and come home with 2 plants

Barb,

I just forgot to plug it back in for a week or two ........... :D
That shelter was a bit of a tight fit, definitely going to have to add some height for next year.

Here's a couple GH photos to show how packed it is,

I was using 2 ceramic heaters for the first couple winters, they did okay, but had trouble keeping up when it dropped below 10* (in the original 12' X 12' section)

Used this heater last winter, it's a 240V, 4000 Watt unit. Really cranks out the heat, also cheaper to run than the other two heaters combined.

Natural gas/propane would be the least expensive to heat with, if you are looking to just keep things above freezing, then one or two small electric heaters should work. Also make sure to have a backup heater available if you lose power.

Caulking your GH as airtight as possible will help reduce the heating load, you can also use pool covers, bubble wrap, etc, to help insulate.

(Lowes sometimes has these on sale, here's a link to the catalog: http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=p ... lpage=none)
