When to start protecting Agave's
I have some Agave Harvardia and Agave Parryi in a raised bed made up of pea gravel and sand. I was wondering when is the best time to start protecting them because its been in the 40's at night and its been raining a lot. Also do you think I should protect my Yucca Rostratas over the winter like do ...

Yeah I have read that Magnolia's have low germination rates, and they say to soak them in water about 4 days to get rid of the fleshy red pulp, the pulp has a germination inhibitor in it apparently, probably to keep them from germinating until the spring. I am soaking mine now, then ill clean them t...

Anyone had an experience growing Magnolia grandiflora seed?
Anyone had any luck growing Magnolia graniflora from seed? I collected probably about 30 seeds the other day from the Southern Illinois University campus. I was bored in between classes, lol. I just have no idea how to germinate them. Anyone have any advice?

Thanks Barb and Cameron, so far it appears that the needle palms have to be the slowest growers and they take forever to germinate, like it took them 7 months I planted the seeds in Feb and they germinated in August. The Sabal minors were super fast to germinate took only 3 weeks and the Trachycarpu...

Southern Mags are pretty common down here. There are many large old specimens of the species type which is generally less hardy than Edith Borgue or Braken's Brown Beauty. I have several on my road and there are a lot of large one's on the SIU campus in Carbondale, some of these are Braken's Brown b...

Jeff- This is the first year for growing any agave. I will prob. cover them with plastic and make some kind of greenhouse type thing over them. It is way to wet here in the winter time for them. They can take cold, but they will rot if it's wet and cold. Andy- This is the first year iv grown Chicago...

Cross pollinating colocasia
I was wondering if anyone has every cross pollinated any Colocasia before? I have a "Jacks Giant" and a "Black Beauty" that are flowering at the same time. Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe I can breed a giant black Colocasia, who knows.
