Thanks, Bill. Certainly another option for me.

It may be a wee bit expensive to send one here but their site is inspirational as are all of you.

Wonderful plants. Paul.

Looks like I'll need to learn how to hybridize yuccas. :)

Sorry to chime in here.

This year I snapped the flowers off my filamentosa to hopefully start getting a bit of a trunk-like effect as others have mentioned. There were some pictures of some filamentosa that people had done that with so I thought rather than have suckers everywhere.....

Thanks hj, and now I must go web surfing to look at these sites.

I did enjoy the Colorado one which I saw awhile back. I noticed he had posted on here a few times.

Tree yuccas in the Okanagan

So from what I've read and the photos I've seen I'm assuming I need to hunt down an Y. elata, right? Any other good ones I should be looking at?

Perhaps a Joshua tree?

Yes, John, I mustn't forget the snow cover which is always great insulation and it seemed to last forever this last winter.

Book: Palms Won't Grow Here...

I'm sure this has been discussed on here before but I can't find it anywhere. I know it's a bit on a high note but there are some neat things discussed in it. The author's advice got me to try some plants I would have never tried here and I've succeeded with most of them. Anyone else find this book ...

I don't think I'll plant the velutina outside but one never knows with me. Yes, Barb, my one Basjoo has come back three years in a row. A friend on another forum told me he knew of one in Kelowna that gets massive every year at his friend's house so I often wonder what I am doing wrong. I really thi...

Wow, it's all quite amazing isn't it? I know one nursery in town got the those plants here last year, Barb and no one bought them. Also I saw them in a garden centre in Oliver as well. I don't think either location has them this year. I'm glad to hear they are doing well for you. Sad that there is n...

Barb, they sure don't like wind. My Musa velutina was shredded at the start of the season in the wind but my canna leaves were fine. Now that would be an interesting hybrid, oh well. Don't you ever leave any in the garden over the winter, Barb? I've left several out there and most of them have...

It's a bit hot to plant the Basjoo right now but I'd like to divide it into three and pot two sections into different areas of my yard. Of course I'll have to provide lots of protection for the winter. The other section I'll throw into the basement. I'm thinking I should plant out my velutina too bu...

Any small needle palms in the lower BC mainland?

Would anyone know if there is any to be had anywhere or must I resort to seed?

It would be nice to start with a larger plant but my wallet says no.

Thanks for the help.

I'm no expert but from what I've read European Fan Palm would be the hardiest and then probably Washingtonia robusta and then the Queen Palm.

Snow is certainly a good insulator as indicated from your link.

I look forward to hearing from others about this.

I'm sure it would be best to have some root growth before the cold sets in but how late would it be feasible for me to plant?

Hello from the south Okanagan

Not sure I ever posted my intro or not. I am originally from Calgary and have always been a zone pusher. I moved specifically to be able to grow even more plants in my garden. I had hoped to be on the coast but found the rain a bit much and me unable to afford a house so here I am in Penticton and a...

Right I'll try to take some photos of my seedling clumps tomorrow. Yes, clumps.... sigh... I know they should be separated but I'm scared they'll be too late to re-establish before winter. Maybe I can get a shot of the lone Sabal minor seedling too or someone can gently tell me it's dead. Oh... I sh...

I thought it might be time for me to try some more seeds. Any good sources around for Needle Palm seed or other hardier types of palms or yucca?

Have many folks here used rarepalmseeds?

Thanks in advance.

yuccas hardy in the okanagan

Which yuccas would be hardy here aside from glauca and filamentosa? Is recurvifolia? Which others? Also where are these fine plants available? I did see baccata at the Summerland Ornamental Garden and know that Cedar Rim carries them but what other types are possible? Thanks in advance. Ron, in Pen...
