Hello

Hi all, It has been years since I posted last. Good to see some familiar faces and new faces interested in creating tropical gardens in the north. I moved to a new home a couple years ago and finally can focus on the gardens. I currently only have 2 cold hardy palms in the ground. One is a 7 year ol...

Your palm looked like mine after I over watered it during winter. I now keep it on the dry side during the winter.

Thank you for the offer, but I had to put my palm hobby on hold for awhile. I lost my greenhouse in a wind storm last year and have no room to grow anything at this time. I will give them another try when I get my setup back up.

In my case I think I have more foliage than the roots can supply with water because of the low soil temps. I also gave my palm a drink of warm water last week and it responded well.

If cans of spray foam weren't so darn expensive, it'd be worthwhile to build a structure and just spray the inside, closing all the little cracks (might save time assembling insulation to fight snugly). 2 words.......duct tape. I am never allowed to use spray foam again. Last time I had it in my ha...

Jim, The weather event you described is likely what caused the damage. We had very simular conditions in November. Barb, I have hardwood bark mulch piled up around the base of the pink boxes, maybe a foot or so. We had 60mph winds last week and they didn't move, but the mulch was froze. If the mulch...

There has been alot of dialog about Trachy tesan on this site and others. Most treat it as another "snake oil" trachy. I have also noticed the same traits as you. They have much stiffer and shorter leafs than my other trachys except my bulgarias. The bulgarias and tesan are very simular.

I prefer them when they "stretch out" for sun. I think they look even more tropical. Are you going to plant it in the ground for the summer? I had a seedling planted last spring that took a 23*F night and didn't even flinch. They are very hardy.

Dan,

It is most likely going through some shock. Your soil is most likely still around 50-55* which your palm's roots are adjusting to. In additon, make sure you don't over water it. Normal spring rain fall should be plenty for it. I would only water it if you go a week or so without a good rain.
