Hello
Hi all, It has been years since I posted last. Good to see some familiar faces and new faces interested in creating tropical gardens in the north. I moved to a new home a couple years ago and finally can focus on the gardens. I currently only have 2 cold hardy palms in the ground. One is a 7 year ol...

If cans of spray foam weren't so darn expensive, it'd be worthwhile to build a structure and just spray the inside, closing all the little cracks (might save time assembling insulation to fight snugly). 2 words.......duct tape. I am never allowed to use spray foam again. Last time I had it in my ha...

Jim, The weather event you described is likely what caused the damage. We had very simular conditions in November. Barb, I have hardwood bark mulch piled up around the base of the pink boxes, maybe a foot or so. We had 60mph winds last week and they didn't move, but the mulch was froze. If the mulch...

Knock on wood, everything has done well in the insulation boxes. I did discover spear pull in the Washington state trachy today which is in a styrofoan cooler box. I am still trying to figure out why. The palm looks great and has been protected from cold and rain since November. The only thing I can...

After that we're all hoping to take the winter protection off. I've given up hope for an unprotected palm, we just stay cold for too long for any to make it long term......I am a big wuss when it comes to my palms and will baby them till they die. Unfortunitly I speed the process up at times with m...

Hi all! Here are a few pics of the palms I am over-wintering here in Central Pennsylvania as of the end of January. I am using an idea from Kevin in Utah, who some might know for my palm protection this year. The boxes are contstructed of 2" insulation board and heated with a 20 watt landscape ...

LOL Barb!!! I will make sure I get some pics of the trachys this spring. I also planted a sabal brazoria and sabal birmingham so it will be interesting to see how they faired. We went down to -15F a few weeks ago, so my hopes are not high. I planted some Mediterranean Fan Palm seeds last year at the...

Hey Laaz!! Hope all is well!! You have more hands on experience than me with sabals, but those palms look like they have been there a while and have all the traits of a birmingham. I am curious why you think they are regular sabals. The palms being located in NE Oklahoma makes me think they are not ...

Barb, I did plant 3 small bulgarian trachy's in the ground at my parents place which is a 6b US climate . Time will tell if they survived this winter, they are under leaves at the moment. We have been below normal for 2 months now so we shall see.. The portapotty and rainbow sum up most of my life.....

Barb, I have found the opposite to be true with every PDP I have had. Keeping the soil moist has led to fungus problems time after time for me. My current one is doing a bit better this winter. I have it growing in VERY well drained soil in a pot just big enough for the root system and water it once...

No his death had noting to do with the palm..LOL. PDP are still the toughest palm for me to keep alive during winter. I have better luck with a Ma...

Barb, Here is a pic of the bulgarian palms. I am pretty sure these are close to 30 years old. They are growing in basically a US zone 7 climate with no protection. I am not sure of their status of late, but I have about 2 dozen young offspring from them. Even as seedlings they have a much stiffer le...

Thanks all for the advice!! I was thinking of putting it where I had my robusta that got fried when the power went off during a 0* night. It gets about 5-6 hours of direct morning sun a day. The robusta grew well there so I would think the Needle would also. Turtile I got them at Lowe's. Long story ...

Advice on Needle palm location
Hi all, I picked up a 7gal Needle palm today along with a 7gal Silver Med Fan at my local box store. I have a location for the Med fan, but wanted to get some input on the needle palm. What is the best location for a Needle in zone 6? Also what kind of soil mix would be best? Never grew Needle palms...

Dan, If I was a betting man...and I am....I would say your soil is too wet. My trachys hate wet feet!!! I have used the same cactus/palm soil and had problems with my soil staying too wet. I now add some coarse sand and wood chips to all my soil. I just planted a 15 gal. Trachy here in Pennsylvania....

Barb That is a Blue Java or Ice cream banana. It does have a new leaf waiting for warm weather. Below is my 4' basjoo that I over wintered in my basement. Frost got it also, but it is also pushing up a new leaf. It's staying in the ground next winter. http://img128.imageshack.us/img128/1420/1001735y...

Susan Hello from central Pennsylvania!!! I think the only indoor palm more tempermental than a pygmy is a majesty palm. Your plam looks like a classic over watered indoor pygmy. I have killed at least 4 of them this way. Through my failures I finally kept a pygmy alive by doing the following: - Prov...
